Blown Woofer Pioneer CS 99?

I have a pair of Pioneer CS 99 Speakers I got a couple of months ago on Craig's List for $150. The right speaker has developed a rattle (woofer?) with increased volume. Also, the midrange need to be re-coned as the foam is deteriorated.
How can I tell if the rattle is the woofer or the midrange?

What is the best way to repair either mid-range or the woofer?

Best way to isolate the issue is to open the rear of the cabinet and disconnect one of the suspect drivers and then put the cover back on and play it. Then you'll want to do the same with the other suspect driver disconnected, having reconnected the first. Because it's possible one could be making the other rattle.

I would venture a guess that it'd be more cost-effective to simply buy a replacement driver(or even a whoe cabinet for parts), rather than try to have one repaired. these speakers can be had for not much cash.

BTW, you could also ake a driver out and play it by itself to see if that's the problem or if you're actually hearing a cabinet rattle.

First, running the speaker with a driver that has the surround parted is a recipe for disaster. The surround helps orient the voice coil and if operated long enough or pushed hard enough, the voice coil will start hitting the pole piece or bottoming out. This might be what you're hearing. The solution is to buy new surrounds and repair the driver. A simple way to discern which driver is making the sound is to detach the wires on the terminals of individual drivers from the back and power the rest of the speaker.

I will do as you advise and try and isolate the rattle. My only access to Pioneer CS 99 parts is Ebay. Craig's list is limited to larger cities.

Is it the mids with bad surrounds or the tweets? The tweets are famous for deteriorating while the mids on mine still look like new.

I think it may be a tweeter....had to get a tool to remove the speaker and work on them in the AM.

if there anything like my cs-77a i think it's the tweeter foam surround that rotted away. i think the mids are also made of cloth and are shielded by a very large round cylinder to prevent LF interference from the woofers. have you bother taking the front cover off and just take one driver out at a time to see what's going on?

you don't have to take the back off really. you should be able to unhook the drivers from the front as well. be lot easier then taking on and off the back.

All drivers are rear-mounted on the baffle in the CS 99, he must remove the back in order to remove or disconnect any of them.

Never had the CS-99's but had the CS-99a's, well worth the fix. search out the problem and probably replace with a good used one from EBay, I see them all the time for the Pioneer CS models at low cost to buy. I still enjoy a pair of CS-77's. Good luck.

Are the speakers interchangeable in the CS models? There seem to be more CS99A speakers on the Bay.

I am not sure if the earlier CS-99's are (FB) speakers, my CS-77's are not. I would think it would be a upgrade to replace with a 99a (FB) speaker, you would have to do it as a pair one for each cab to keep them matched. The X-overs are probably close if not the same, I would think the 15" woofers are a size match not sure concerning the others.:scratch2:
