Blu-ray Problem

I would like to share a phenomenon I have encountered and hopefully, someone in this forum could help resolve.

I have recent 2 Movie Blu-ray DVDs - "Kung Fu Panda" and "Wanted" that somehow will NOT play once the usual slide shows are over.

No matter how much I have tried, the screen would turn blank (dark, not blue) when "play button" is hit. I have also tried "hitting direct" to the scene still same result. The other issue is the player will no longer respond to the remote or even direct on the player except the power on/off button.

As such, I have 2 DVDs that cannot be played at all. I am wondering is this is a software or firmware issue. If its the first, I will probably buy another piece to try and if the same problem encountered, then it would most probably the the firmware. How do I fix this? I have a Samsung BP1400 model (el cheapo at S$399). I am even tempted to buy a Sony machine if it would play these 2 movies.

BUT before I jumped to spending, would really seek advise from any members here if they had same experience and if so, can share how to resolve this problem.

firmware issue. lots of discs have similar problems. blu-ray is still on the steep part of the learning curve. get the latest f/w and give it another try.
 
Sales people out there are doing a crappy, non-existent job of letting consumers know that there WILL be firmware updates that have to be done. I guess the only situation you wouldn't have to would be if you have a newer version 2.0 BD player that has an ethernet connection tied in so it does them automatically. In this day and age, it's all about the updates. What a wonderful format we have where if the movie studios do something different, it makes some things not work unless you download a patch.

For any given manufacturer, just have a handy USB thumb drive to put the update on. I still have to do some occasional updates on my Toshiba HD player.
 
FWIW...the studying on Blu Ray I've done seems to indicate the PS3 is the player that will digest the most discs without hiccups.
 
They cover their butts on stuff like this. This is from page 6 of the owner's manual:

Restrictions on Playback
This player may not respond to all operating commands because some BD, DVD or CD discs allow specifi c or limited operation and features during playback.
Please note that this is not a defect in the player.
Samsung cannot assure that this player will play every disc bearing the BD, DVD and CD logos because disc formats may evolve, and problems and errors can occur during the creation of BD, DVD and CD software and/or the manufacture of discs.
This player also operates differently than a standard DVD player or other AV equipment. Please contact the SAMSUNG customer care center if you have questions or encounter diffi culty in playing BD, DVD or CD discs in this player. Also, refer to the rest of this Manual for additional information on playback restrictions.
 
Are these the first movies you've tried to play on it, or have you previously been able to watch other Blu-Ray movies? How do you have the Blu-Ray player connected to your TV?

How recently did you buy it, and how is the customer service at the shop you bought it from? Can you bring it in and get a salesperson to help you figure it out?

Hi Ivan,

Thanks for the advise. Managed to finally get the Samsung service personnel over my place to upgrade the firmware to the latest revision and presto! Works now.

I am surprised at the level of service Samsung would do for a S$399 machine and charges no cost! Wow!

Its indeed a firmware issue and now resolved by local Samsung representative. Thanks for the advise. All discs playing now!

i 've had a bdp1400 (it came with fw 1.8) for ~6 months and the only time i had an issue with a bd not playing was solved by cleaning the (new) disc. i dont remember the title, tho.

samsung sent me a fw 1.9 cd (i had to call and request it) 2 months ago, but i wont load it 'til there's a problem.

so far, other than long load times it's been a great player.
