Blues Haul

I recently got it into my head that I needed some blues in my collection. Several trips to the local record shops were disappointing. It seems, in Detroit at least, blues vinyl is pretty hard to come by. Then, yesterday, I stopped at a local favorite with the intention of picking up some Cal Tjader, Milt Jackson, or Terry Gibbs (I'm on a vibraphone kick lately). After spending about an hour going through the jazz stuff I picked out 4-5 titles. On my way to register, I decided to check out the "New Arrivals" section, which I would normally neglect. Boy, was I in for a surprise! :D

Here's the haul I ended up with. They are all NM and were about $5 a pop.

Code:
Howlin' Wolf: S/T - Original Chess Masters (MCA)
Howlin' Wolf: Moanin' in the Moonlight - Original Chess Masters (MCA)
Howlin' Wolf: The London Sessions - Original Chess Masters (MCA)
Little Walter: Best of - Original Chess Masters (MCA)
Little Walter: Hate to See You Go - Original Chess Masters (MCA)
Little Walter: Confessin' The Blues - Carosello (Italy)
Sonny Boy Williamson: Bummer Road - Chess/Janus
Muddy Waters: At Newport 1960 - Chess (reissue?)
Wolf/Waters/Diddley: Super Super Blues Band - Chess (1984)
V/A: Heavy Heads - Chess
V/A: Folk Festival of the Blues - Chess (1984)
V/A: Blues from Big Bill's Copa Cabana - Chess (1984)
V/A: Wizards from the Southside - Chess (1982)

They appear to be 70's or 80's re-issues but, still, some great music there.

Yep, the MCA 'Original Chess Masters' are indeed reissues of the original albums on Chess, but that doesn't make 'em sound any worse! Definately a good haul, and I hope you've learned not to pass up the New Arrivals bin, that way you get to look at stuff first...

Me too, lots of blues on CD but little vinyl. No luck at the thrifts or local shops. Wierd but, I've been listening to lots of vibes too. Thankfully I'm pretty deep in the Tjader, 'Bags' and MJQ department. Last month went to a huge music store in hollywood and scored a dzn or so including the same Lil' Walter Chess compilation. Very Nice.

I often wonder why blues and jazz vinyl are so scarce in the thrifts. Relatively smaller sales and/or do people just keep 'em?

Ditto. Tons of classic but zilch for blues and jazz.
Durham, NC has a wonderful history of blues and jazz but I never find them in the thrifts. Perhaps you are right . . . people just keep 'em.

BTW, nice haul xiaNaix!
I'm a huge fan of the Chess Masters. Picked up a sealed Chess Master double LP of Lowell Fulson on eprey :thmbsp:

I think you guys are right, blues records are seldom sold because they never go out of style. I have a few of the ones from the OP, and they are treasures to me.
Maybe Blues records can be looked upon like collecting vintage gear, they may not get used every day but owners are fond of them for their own reasons.
Howlin' Wolf is Americana and will always be appreciated. Can't say that's true about the johnny-come-lately pop bands.
Just my opinion.
