No, you need at least 12V for this to work (actually I've found different specs saying from 8V to 14V minimum). 3 D cells will only give you 4.5 volts. Minimum of 10 rechargeables or 8 alkaline (if you think you're going to use both types, go for the 10 cell setup, the amp can operate on more than 12V, but 12V is a minimum). With good rechargeable AAs you should get at least 4-5 hours of playing time. Using more cells will give you a longer playing time, but don't exceed 24V.
