Bob Dylan Mofi SACDs

Listening to Dylan in Mono

conjures up images of me sitting on the floor with a shoe box top and a pack of zig zags separating the seeds from some maryjane. I always sat in the sweet spot waiting for Rainy Day Woman. Yeah Dylan in Mono is the way to go IF the recording was originally done in Mono. :thmbsp:

I take it case by case. I like mono for the solo stuff. Or a narrow stereo mix. I'm not a fan of goofy stereo mixes(voice/harmonica in one channel, guitar in the other). If I was the one putting the SACDs together, I would have had a stereo and a mono mix on the two hi-rez channels for the early albums. And a stereo and a multi-channel mix for the post mono era albums. That's the music fan in me, though. If I was a bean counter I would have released the mono releases as a separate set like they did.:D

I found this site after some searching. Some good info.

I'm OK w/ mono or stereo w/ Dylan. Both sound good, and unlike the Beatles, there are no "holes" in the soundstage w/ stereo.

I picked up an original UK pressing - stereo - of "Blonde on Blonde" that really shines. I have a few other UK LP pressings that sound quite good to me. Not sure why UK pressings of a US artist are so good, but I have a half-baked theory that UK engineers are good at taming harsh top ends. The Stones' "Sticky Fingers" being but one example.

I really need a good pressing of "Desire," speaking of harsh top ends. Music Direct has the availability date for this SACD as "TBA."

I have Columbia SACD of:
Slow Train Coming
Another Side of Bob Dylan
Bringing It All Back Home
Nashville Skyline

All are for sale. PM if you want pricing.

I also have Blood On The Tracks SACD in my collection. It's not for sale. I prefer Columbia PC 33235 original January 1975 release over the SACD.

I got to see Dylan on tour this past fall with Mark Knopfler and it was really a treat. For a while I was in the second row (I work security, and we rotate positions for breaks).

I have the Sony/Legacy Blonde on Blonde SACD. Sounds good to me. Great prices on some of the Sony Dylan SACDs at importcds.com.

Not to hijack, but the only MoFi SACD I have is Billy Joel's Glass Houses. I'm under-impressed. And it's packaged in a cheap cardboard sleeve, not a high-grade SACD jewel case.

All the Dylan Columbia SACD I have are in digipaks.

I'm pretty sure they all were.
My last MFSL SACD was in one of those SACD cases. I'm not a fan of digipacks, but it bugs me less with SACDs. They never leave the house, and I'm really careful with them, so those stay pretty much NM. And in the case of the Dylans, I'd be OK with more digipacks. Like I mentioned earlier, I have an extra empty Bob box to put them.

What container are the MFSL SACD Dylans in?

I don'thave a problem with the digipaks at all. The new releases that come in a cheap cardboard sleeve bug me. The last 3 new ones I got came that way, Emmylou Harris, Jim James, and Dwight Yoakam.

"digipak" - marketing-speak for cheap cardboard sleeve.:D

For sure. Even worse is when they are touted as being "green".
I'm not a big fan, but I can live with them. What really bugs me about them is when the center thingy that holds the disc in place goes and the disc falls out. I have a Bob Marley box that is like that. I love the set, but hate that the discs don't always stay in place. There's no way to fix that.
And yeah, those cheapo cardboard sleeves suck. Especially when you have to touch the disc's surface to get it out.

"digipak" - marketing-speak for cheap cardboard sleeve.:D

Not as cheap as plain cardboard sleeves with no CD holder. It's a patented product with a trade name of digipak. If you invented it you would not have to worry about marketing speak. Just dragging the cash to the bank.

I stand corrected if "digipak" means a cardboard binder with a plastic tray on which to place the CD. The MoFi Billy Joel SACD did NOT come in such a case. Instead, it's packaged in a cardboard sleeve, like a mini-LP jacket. The disk is slid in and out of the sleeve.

If you want to ditch the cardboard (digipak or sleeve), consider these: http://www.sleevecityusa.com/sacd-super-jewel-boxes-s/1841.htm
