I am a complete noob, looking to create a system from scratch. 12x12 room, moderate volume, blues, rock, pop. I want to start with speaker choice. Pretty moderate budget. If you think I left something out, feel free to post. Thanks!

There are so MANY bookshelf speakers out there, a short poll list is not adequate - not even close. None of my very good b-shelves are on the list. Trust your own ears, as polls have limitations. See my sig for advice - it has served me well.

I'd rather have some data rather than no data at all. What should I do--choose randomly? I can't go anywhere to compare them.

I can't trust my own ears, as I have not heard any of them and won't be able to. I have tried to choose well reviewed speakers at the $300 (approx) price point, but I understand that there are probably others in existence. This was my attempt to come up with a list of good bets.
 
well, they are all good but only you know what sounds good to you. Just make sure where ever you buy them from has a liberal return policy. but, who knows? maybe you'll get lucky and be satisfied with whatever you choose. Depending on your expectations, that does happen on occasion.

There are alternatives to buying new/retail. Here is a list of my speakers, and how I got them:

Yamaha NS-5 - swapped a turntable I had $25 invested in, and the Yamaha owner had the same amount in his speakers. We were both happy. I think it was an FB marketplace deal.

Original Genesis - found at a flea market and bought it with money I found.

Mission 70 - found at a garage sale, about 25 bucks, and I love them.

Vandersteen 5C - $400 thru C-list.

Keep an eye out, good speakers can be had cheap. There is NEVER a need to buy new, but YMMV.
 
Spend another 100$ and look at the JBL studio 530's New, less used plenty available
\Better yet used JBL Studio S-38's check them out. High quality 3 ways, made in the USA
