Boost TT signal

I have an ADC 1700 TT with a good cart and stylys,is there a way to boost the signal without adding noise,as some of my older LPs (Beatles,Who,etc),dont seem to quite sound the way i like without turning volume on my Sansui AU 717 up a bit.I heard people getting a Phono PreAmp for this but not quite sure.Or should i just leave it and enjoy.

What cartridge are you using?

Does it have lower output than other components such as CD player or tuner?
 
You can't run a turntable into line inputs on your preamp.......are you? You do need to have a phono input for RIAA EQ. I would assume the Sansui has a sufficient phono pre built right in. As malden asked, what phono cartridge are you using?

ha,i am not,but i do have a phono preamp sitting around(Project PhonoBox II) and i have a Pickering XV-15 625E cart
 
If you are not getting enough gain from your unit's inbuilt pre-stage then yes, I would look at getting a good outboard stage that provides more gain, and run the outputs of that to a line-level input.

You have a preamp sitting around so why don't you just hook it up and try it? It might sound better or worse than the Sansui's built-in one but the only way to know is to test it.
