Bose 1800 with Alons IV

hi Guys,
I want your thoughts on whether pairing the bose 1800 amplifier and Alon IV would be a wise idea or its a recipe for disaster.
I have an Alon IV and i am being offered a bose 1800 for virtually nothing and looking at the specs of the Amp , i am wondering if
  • its safe for the speaker
  • if the sound quality would be ok

There are several threads here at AK that detail fully the reatoration of these amplifiers. This would be prudent before connecting it to any speakers.

The general consensus on the big Bose amps is that they are quite capable.

But specs-wise Are they a good match ?
 
It seems the Bose 1800 was out sourced and is just an average amp, so if you are getting it cheaply....try it out and see if you like it. If you don’t like it, sell it or improve it so it sounds better. There are threads on this site about this amp...
 
I know the Carver 1400 was the same amp, but do not know who built them.

Try it, you have nothing to lose.
 
Bose amps I saw at Mac clinics would shut down from over heating when asked to put out anything over 35 watts in about 10 minutes. Their distortion numbers weren't that good either. They. oscillated like crazy in the ultrasonic region when pushed to hard and would take out tweeters before the blink of an eye. I'll take an old Phase Linear or one of my old Crowns back first. Davie couldn't even set the voltage correctly before the amp would shut down at 20,000 Hz. There were enough transistors but the heat sink design was very poor.

That'd be a series V or VI 1800(built by Carver) from about 25 years later than the original 1800 that we're likely talking about here.

The original 1800 is a big overbuilt discrete 70lb chunk of amplifier. The series II, and series III both had cosmetic changes, IMO an improvement over the original. Series III and later are all fan cooled. Certainly there were also electronic revisions/improvements as the shortcomings Twiii mentions were very real.

The series IV looks like it could be the first version that Bose farmed out. I have no clue who made it, but i get the rub that it wasn't Bose.

They also made a more cosmetically pleasing version of the 1800 for home use, the 1801.

Anechoic frequency response: 29Hz–25kHz ±3dB.
Low-frequency bandwidth (anechoic): –3dB at 29Hz, –9dB at 20Hz.
Sensitivity: 87dB/W/m. Impedance: 3 ohms minimum.
Amplifier requirements: 100W minimum, 200W recommended.
 
I had a Bose 1800 VI (475 into 8ohm i think) and it was a monster.. great sound and bombproof- more headroom that I'd ever need. I've heard good things about the 1800 but the V and VI versions are banging. I had it on the shelf for a spell and decided to sell--dumb. Some guy drove 100 miles to pick it up. I turned it on for him when he got there. With the new preamp it was magical..He was handing me smiling cash and I was instantly frowny regretting it.

Seems like the amp would be a great match for the Alons.. man those big meters on the 1801 are so purty.
