Bose 201 left speaker distortion

A double whammy. A new member who bought Bose 201s. I recently bought a set of 201s bookshelf speakers on ebay. Of course one of them is bad. The woofer looks fine, and not knowing a lot about speaker design, I would suspect either the tweeter (I dont think I can get at this on a 201) or the crossover). The speaker plays, but there is a fuzzy distortion. Realizing Bose 201s are low end speakers, does anyone have any experience with this type of problem? I would like to fix it..

(Actually, I have a Kenwood KR-9600, Pioneer SX-850, Pioneer SG-9500 and 9800 equalizers, and a combination of Bose, Infinity, Pioneer and Epicure Model 15 speakers). These speakers were for the shed stereo...

These are Bose, I think the fuzzy sounding one is the normal one :D

Sorry, couldn't resist. It is most likely a blow tweeter, I don't know what you spent on these, but I wouldn't put much into fixing them. Can you send them back? I see them going for <$50 on ebay right now, it would probably be cheaper to just replace them. That being said, why did you get Bose? Whatever you did spend, you can find a better speaker for the same price.

You haven't mentioned which series they are, and I don't know anything about fixing speakers, but have you tried contacting Bose? I'd be curious to know exactly what model it is and whether Bose still supports it with parts or service. Your experience is one of the reasons I prefer just to buy new, and I'm very happy with my 301 series V.

hi, thanks for the responses. SERIES II. The guy who sold them is not responding. I thought I would just try to fix it. After digging into it a little, it now DOES appear to be the woofer. I have been playing it some and sitting next to it. Its an intermittant woofer distortion and vibration. I tried checking all the internal wires, and everything seems fine. The external terminal posts are fine- those spring loaded kind. In terms of why I picked these, they were 39.00 plus shipping I believe. Used to have 4 Bose 301s in the day, and awhile back I bought 2 old 901 Series IIs with the cloth drivers so I wouldnt have to refoam them...I like the compactness of the 201 and 301. But lets face it, they have limits....
