Bose 601 series 2 rebuild questions

Had no luck making something to hold down surrounds while gluing.

This, to me, is the toughest part. Damn lip always wants to come up.

Resorted to clothespins. Didn't know what else to do.

And the amount to use is impossible to calculate. Too much, it squirts out everywhere. Too little, you fear the seal will break.

I have two drying. Clothespins all around.
 
You will get the feel for the glue. Your right in the wheel house with most of us if you over apply your first couple of surrounds.

As far has holding them in place clothes pins work or plateware. Measure your proper circumference and go plate shopping with a measuring tape at your local GW or SA.

I recently used two martini glasses to hold foams first round a pair of mids I was fixing. After securing proper placement, then flip.

Damn, that's a good idea. We have three thrifts and their bound to have something suitable.

I've come up with a novel idea for back mounted when the surround doesn't press naturally against the cone. Face the driver down, with screws or something to hold the frame above the surface of the table, then load up the surround with BB's. The additional weight works.
 
What kind of feet re on the speakers? In the past I've used round wood dowels cut to length or square stock, paint them and glue a bit of felt on the bottom. Feet for a 601 might be hard to find. I like the plate idea for gluing the surrounds, I'll have to remember that one.
 
Lavane, that's an idea I may employ. 1'' long, tapered ever so slightly, black plastic.

That's going to be the easy part.


If anyone knows more about using car fuses like previously posted, I'm all ears. Otherwise, its 18 bucks to bose that I don't have.

Thanks again, everyone. First two are fully refoamed, will be going into bottoms of cabs and soldered to wires. On to next 2 tonight.

FUSE HOLDER, I MEAN. If so, anyone certain the rating? Previously suggested 1.25 to 1.5 amps. Sound about right?

Do that, or don't put one in. When the time and money roll around, install. Unless you're going to give/sell them to a teenager ...

Since I will flip if unimpressed, I'll probably be putting a simple fuse assembly in there.

using an online calculator, using a 1.25 amp fuse at 110 volts would mean I'd have to hit 137 watts to pop it.

I'm never ever going to hit that amount.

So, do I just remove the lamps and tie the ends together? Probably, but I'm a technical mess.

Whatever it takes to get a reliable connection in there for the time being. Once tested, you can go back in and make it right. This is just to get the ball rolling and get an audition. I'm sure you'll want to find a halfway decent fuse holder, something with some Elvis in it. That way when someone else takes a look at your work, they give you The Nod.

Nah, I'm just enough. Time for a nap though. I finally got some free plywood to make the bikini grills for the Altecs, been out in the garage getting them on the freight train to donesville. Yaawwwwnnn.

Well, bottom two woofers (dirtiest ones) are soldered back to the leads, and installed in the cabs. Distressing tho, the plastic trim rings don't sit flush.

Only thing I can figure is the excessive glue prevents them.

And I broke one of those leads on the resistor. Someone else here stated they were known for breaking, so I'll be grabbing some of those, if I can, at the Shack.

1ohm 5% 15 watt is what it says. Hope they have it, but doubt it.

Perk up spunky! There's gotta be an interesting solution to a distressing problem. Contemplate it on the tree of woe.

Any junk amps or receivers around? I've found a few 1ohm wirewound resistors in the several watt range in the final amp stages of old junkers before. If you do have a E-junk pile it might be worth a look.

Lord do i? I'll give it a look, but I'm in no hurry. Need to make a Parts Express order anyway.

Two woofers I refoamed last night turned out nearly perfect. I used less glue and mopped it around with a q tip. Then cut the glue bottle at an angle and put a thin bead around the edge. Looks so much better than the other two i butchered. No VC rub, tho.

And I've refoamed many speakers. Just now getting the knack.

Pretty sure I have spare 1w from my Mach One upgrades. Let me know if you still need them. Nice big ceramic ones.

Somebody said these resistors were known to fail at the connection between wire and resistor. That's exactly where it failed.

I have noticed the wire Bose used is very brittle. Bend it just a bit too much, it simply snaps off. Had a hard time getting it wrapped back around the posts for sufficient grab, and I soldered over that.

Just seems Bose used chintzy wire.
 
Well, I've decided to order these from Digikey...

1 ohm, 5% tolerance, but 20 watt instead of 15. Should be fine, right?

And as for fuses, I think I'm going to say screw it. I don't play stuff very loud, and I can always go back and put them in.

I sure would like to take out that brittle wire, but getting to all those tweeters presents more of a challenge than I care for. For now, just making sure to put plenty of solder on the leads, and not bend them reinserting the woofers.
 
I vote for that way. Depending on how much you enjoy their sound, you can always go back in and "put the touch" on 'em. I'm really interested to see what you think of them.

I just finished the bikini grills for the Altecs. I had 2 botches! One of which required me to pull off the grill cloth and do over. But it's all taken care of and tomorrow I'll carry on.

When you apply the badges, I'll consider you having crossed the finish line.
And while everyone is trying to convince you to keep them, as they are a fine speaker + the love you've invested, I understand.

Priorities are priorities. And the taxman cometh, as I seem to recall. :scratch2:
