Bose 601 Series II Quarks...

Hello all, new to the forum as I just picked up a pair of Bose 601 Series II speakers and I am curious about the odd way that the highs jump and get buried depending on the music.
They are excellent sounding and just the deep bass I remember when I was a kid. But I notice that when there is a song that starts out soft it will bring that volume way up until the rest of the song and bass kicks in and then the highs get buried. It may just be the way they’re supposed to work or maybe there’s an adjustment...or could a different receiver work better with these? Any knowledge you guys have is helpful.

They are powered by a HarmanKardon AVR3600 in stereo mode.

That's odd, for sure. Is the tweeter actually cutting out during high level passages, or does the balance just become too bass heavy?

Some receivers have settings that automatically adjust the volume... does your HK receiver have any settings that you can play with?
 
I agree with jdmccal.
You may have a loose connection.
Your speakers are due for a recap anyway.
You may as well buy some new caps, so when you open them up and check connections, you can swap in new caps.

The 601-ii is a great speaker.

The balance becomes bass heavy and buries the highs. But when it raises the highs in the beginning it sound beautiful. It’s almost as if the crossover is trying to actively adjust the speaker levels.

It does but I have everything of just set to stereo because of this issue. I was thinking maybe the receiver EQ was responsible. I may need to try a different receiver just to test differences.

The are in excellent condition, refoamed of course and very clean. But no clue what’s been done to the inside. I may need to investigate and replace if necessary.
 
Good to hear.
Mine are less than perfect, coming from a garage sale.
I bet that you will really like yours once they are sorted out.
 
It sounds like you may have already done this, but make sure any kind of "dynamic EQ" is turned off. I have a Marantz NR1602 and it's dynamic EQ is way too bass heavy to my ears.
 
I have series 1. i replaced the foam, the caps, the cement resistors ( the leads break easily ) and the light bulbs. Also clean and check the fit of the light bulb brackets.
My guess is that something in that crossover is dropping out when the bass starts to kick.

very high fun factor in the 601's.
