Bose 901 cabinet repair

I recently bought a pair of Bose 901 that were sitting in someone's garage and work great, but have severe damage to the cabinets. I'm not committed to spending hundreds to get them redone or anything so I wanted to possibly refinish the veneer myself or put new veneer on. I'm not sure if the veneer on these is thick enough to sand down or is it a waste of time? I am also going to need to repair some sizeable chunks. Any help would be appreciated.
