Bose 901 Equalizer

The 901 Bose serve well when used for the correct purpose, Eddy Franner

Ok....... can you define "correct purpose?" Any speaker, any speaker can have a "correct purpose". My Technics 1-way surround speakers have a "correct purpose", but what does that mean? My crap computer speakers have a "correct purpose", which is to sound like crap! To justify the inherent inferiority of a given loudspeaker, any loudspeaker, even Bose, by simply saying, well, they have to be used in the "right" environment, simply enforces, rather that contradicts my point. Good speakers don't need a perfect environment, perfect components, or perfect anything. Good speakers stand on their own without compromise. Sorry, but you do not get the EQ.

Next! :D

I stand by my words, and I'm not backing off.
.....stand on whatever you want, TL, you didn't live the era and own a 901 system, did you?....seems like you're looking for an arguing contest which doesn't work very well here at AK....I lived the era and had the system being discussed....your turn.....

I got my EQ hooked up today. It did two things for me. It brought to my attention the fact that the single front speakers on both 901's had serious issues.
And it also gave me a brief glimpse into what these speakers can really do. WOW!

I can't wait to get the two front speakers some new surrounds and then really give these 901's a good listening to! The difference between EQ and no EQ is night and day!

All 16 of the other speakers are in good condition, not needing any surrounds. So they were probably already done at some point, while the fronts were forgotten about.
And the amount of bass these were providing at mid-volume with 0 gain on the EQ was surprising and tight.

I'm going to re-do the front two speakers and then mount the 901's properly and hook them up to a decent amp and give them a good audition.

Does anyone know a good formula for re-capping the EQ's? A BOM would be great.

I wish I knew what to compare these speakers to. But not only are they handicapped right now... but they also don't behave like normal speakers. So I can't compare to the B&W or Rockets or any Vintage gear I've had in the past. But they sound well balanced except for some great mid-bass emphasis to make things fun. And they really fill up the room with sound.

Gimmicky? Sure, absolutely.

Sound bad? I don't hear that. I have a feeling these are going to pretty good.

Accurate? I didn't listen to them long enough and they are handicapped right now.

I still don't understand what your point is...

No, I did not live the era, and no I have never owned, nor will I likely ever own a pair of Bose 901, 301, or anything with the Bose name on it. I guess my point is that you can justify anything. If you believe you own a piece of audio Nirvana, then damn it, you do. I do not go looking for an "argument contest" like you accuse me of, but rather I would like to hear some sort of logical reason why anyone would justify the so-called "audiophile" characteristics of an inferior product like the Bose 901? So far all I have heard is justification for the shortcomings of the speakers. My point is that you can justify anything.

So arguing doesn't work well on AK, as you have stated..... and you are right. For the most part what works well on Audio Karma is misinformation and puffery. I have a (fill in the blank) piece of equipment, and I am looking for other people who believe that the (fill in the blank) is the best, or highly desirable, or at least passable in some way in order to justify my own purchases, possessions, and existence. So in order to feel good I seek out sycophants that will reinforce what I already believe. What is that? Mental masturbation, in my book.

In the words of Zilch, more data, less wank. Bose is, was, and always will be a bunch of wank.

.....TestWork, you need to get the lone driver on the front of the 901s fixed as it gives localization to that side of the front soundstage....here's the biggest tip I can give you....use two equalizers on all channels before amplifying....I know, it sounds crazy, "supposedly" a 72db boost at both ends, but it works, wonderfully, try it, like Nike says, just do it....it doesn't take a ton of watts to run two eq's either....the amp sections of an old Sansui receiver with 30 a side drove the two eq's and 4 901s LOUD for a month while my Bose 1801 amp was in the shop....if Bose were going to give me four new 901s and only one equalizer, and that equalizer wat the only one on planet Earth, I'd be sorely disappointed.....

I still don't understand what your point is...
.....TL, my point is four 901s positioned correctly can produce "realism rare" using two equalizers affecting both channels....you're a sharp Guy and handle yourself pretty well posting....why do you say Bose 901s are junk without ever having heard any?.....

This one's in the toilet.

I'll remind everyone once again, making broad, sweeping statements about a component that you have admitted you've never heard, or, even worse, make negative statements about the listening ability of other members who own equipment you have admitted you've never heard, is intolerable.

This thread to so full of trolling, insulting comments I would have to delete half of it if I wanted to leave it up. Not worth it.
