BOSE 901 issue need help please....

realizing my old 901's pretty old technology, but have them hooked up to a new turntable and new Yamaha receiver (with a new Bose active equalizer) and can't get sound to play. If you turn volume way way way up (several turns) you can hear small sound only. Need help please

Does the active equalizer go in the tape monitor loop? Maybe the issue is just to get all the switches set right.
 
Always, always, ALWAYS, list the brand and model number of all the involved gear of topic.

More than likely if the receiver is new that it does not have a true tape monitor loop and may not have provisions for the alternate pre out/main in connections. But, key to knowing that is precisely why it is important to list model numbers and brand, not just brand.
 
When seeking help, please provide all the info we need to help.

All brand names and model numbers are necessary or we go no idea what Yamaha receiver you have.

Does it even have a Tape LOOP or just a tape input and a tape output that are not forming a LOOP and you can not listen to the signal that goes out to the EQ? We don't know and can't tell because we don't have the model number. New gear has lost the Tape Loop (tape monitor) function.

That's immaterial.

Being an AV receiver odds are that it does not have a real tape loop.

Connect the L/R Main pre out to the 901 EQ amp in, then the 901 EQ amp out to the receiver Main pre in.

In a new receiver they often label one input "phono" for selection purposes but there's actually no onboard phono stage. Again, are you absolutely sure the receiver has one?

Ok, now that we have the model # I looked online and it does support mm cartridges, and does "appear" to have a tape loop. That said, how to access these functions can be exacerbating on an AVR to say the least.

The manual shows a TT connected directly to the Phono input.

At the risk of derailing the thread, do you have an example of a unit that has a "Phono" input but no phono stage? I'd be curious to see that.
 
Also, it appears the TT has line level outputs too, in addition to phono output.

OP, describe how you have (or had) all this connected. What inputs/outputs are connected to what?

It appears to have the independent record and playback paths.

Using the pre out/main in would help that confusion but if the OP wants to try to see if tape loop will work then will likely need to set it like with the C-80 preamp I use.

Will need to set the Record Out selector to (in this case Phono) then select Tape (or Tape 1, whatever) as the input to bring the Phono signal through the Bose EQ.

Attached is a picture of that from my garage rig. The Bose EQ is connected to the Tape 1 circuit. The Rec Out selector I have set to Aux because I'm using the Aux input for a portable music player. But, concept would be the same except selecting Phono on the Rec Out selector.

When I had a pair to play with last year, with my dual mono pre, I could not use the Tape loop and had to wire it direct. Worked fine that way.
 
Bose 901 I and II
Bose 901 III and IV
Bose 901 V and VI

use the same eq each. I think that 901 with other eq's do not work properly.

I am just in this moment running Bose 901/ III with the matching equilizer.

I wonder if Scott's 901s drivets surrounds are still intact. Unrelated to his issue. Many never look behind the grill cloth.
