Bose 901 Placement

Aldo, Marantz amps, especially the classic, older models were notoriously conservative on their power ratings. And they were over-built, so the output is cleaner than later designs.

Great information here. I recently got the nostalgia bug. Bought a nice Yamaha CA-610 II Amp & Tuner 50 watts. Then I wanted some 901's, like I had back in 77 series III. Found some Series V on eBay from the original owner. Any way I live in a small house, and I also have some Boston Acoustics A60's that I picked up for 12 bucks. I learned how to replace the foam surrounds on YouTube. They sound incredible. Tonight I have turned the Bose speakers 180 degrees, They are not on the same wall. I know that is just wrong. I will be rearranging furniture for the foreseeable future. The 901's do sound really good with a lot of volume. even when they are reflecting into a different room. I also have a Yamaha P 450 TT, I am looking for recommendations for maybe better placement, it is on a book shelf or new needle brand. My stereo sounds best with my Pioneer CD player, the passages between songs are soundless, but LP's are so cool and album art is part of the enjoyment for me.

I've been making a fair amount of money going through Bose 901s and one time had 3 pairs running off an Onkyo hi powered amp. I was playing my usual PF Dark side of The Moon test CD in a large room. After spending an afternoon playing around with placement, I found myself quite IMPRESSED! Glad the neighbors were all at work! The bottom line, the more power I fed them the better they sounded! I have 3 901s presently and thinking of hooking up a pair on either side of my big screen TV. I'm thinking of using a Carver PT-2400 to run them. Of course, I'll use the Bose EQ in the pre-amp to amp loop. I'd be interested in any thoughts you guys might have.

I would start off with the speakers at listening position ear height. Then move them toward and away from corners to get the best bass balance you can with as little Eq influence as possible. If you get the balance you want with a hole in the middle of the staging then turn the speakers toward you till the hole disappears. Moving away from the rear wall or corner will change the bass presentation, too.

Considering majority of 901 acoustics is the reflected sound, I'd think along side something that will block some of the reflected sound wouldn't be great placement.

From personal experience, such an arrangement diminished the SQ of some Definitive Tech bipolar speakers I used in an HT. They rely on reflected sound too, about 50%, but not as much as 901s at 89% I've seen cited.

I used one pair at home (powered by 76 WPC Marantz separates and, later, McIntosh separates, set up, either on low stands or hanging from the ceiling, exactly as required in the OM) and two pairs (facing backwards on professional Atlas stands) in a mobile DJ setup, powered by two PL 400 II amps. Sounded different but good either way. Used them in every application and space, inside and outside, from intimate to enormous, imaginable. They love power. Lots of it. And they are very forgiving. (Always use the appropriate Bose EQ!) Have fun.

I thought of that too, but I plan to mount the TV on the wall and the 901s will be in front of the TV. I think I will have good reflection.
