Bose 901 With Yamaha A-S801

Have a question. Came across a great deal on a Yamaha A-S801 that i'm looking to add to my current setup. I've been sampling a bunch of older speakers recently, and my current test dummy are the bose 901's.

That said, they use the bose equalizer that is intended to be used in the Tape Monitor or Pre-Out/In sections of receivers or integrateds. This amp has neither. That being said, here is where my "digital Source" question comes in to play:

I only have one audio source. Audioquest DragonFly DAC Red - RCA Cables output.

Since the yammy doesnt have a tape loop or pre out, can i run this arrangement:

-Dragonfly DAC (Fixed output mode 2.1V) -> Bose Equalizer -> Aux/CD input on the integrated amp

Volume on the DAC would be set static 100% which is line level (they claim 2.1V output) and i would modulate volume with the integrated amplifier. Does this seem doable? Dont think ive seen anyone try this. Thanks!

Certainly doable, but don't know the input overload point of the 901 EQ.

Since the alternate connection method for the EQ is between pre out and main in, presumably it could handle at least a volt or two without overloading.

Worst case you'd need to reduce the DAC volume a little if it seemed like the EQ input was overloaded.

I would like to know the voltage of a "TAPE REC" output on a reciever, assuming my audio source is 2.1V already on my current technics reciever, does the reciever step the voltage down before passing through to the TAPE REC output on the reciever?
 
Line level is line level, whether it comes out of the tape output jacks or your DAC's output jacks. Your suggested arrangement will work fine.

I hope you realize the Tape Out from an amplifier is a fixed voltage. The amplifier's volume control does not effect the level of Tape Out connections. If the source has adjustable output it can vary the level. Otherwise there is no way to control volume.
 
You can add a pre-out main-in connection, using nothing but a bunch of cables and a soldering iron. Remember, it's only hubris if you fail! :-)

It's a popular mod in Germany for the A-S 701/501/301 amps. If you can get the service manual, it should be doable for the 801 as well.
