Bose 901's Cheap equalizer advise

They need the eq to make them sound the best. If your not to picky on sound they produce you can do with out.

You make it seem like the equalizer is optional.

Geez... If the EQ bass and treble boost is that dramatic in order to make them sound decent, they must sound damn terrible without the EQ unit in circuit! All midrange!

Absolutely correct. They sound HORRIBLE without the equalizer. LIstening without the equalizer probably gave birth to the phrase "No highs, no lows...must be Bose".

2) Use a good Power Amplifier or Receiver with plenty of power.
3) Proper placement of the Bose 901 speakers.

Mine do fine with a vintage 35-watt receiver. Any of the ported cabinets (acoustic matrix) need very little power to provide reasonable volume.

Proper placement is as important as with any other speaker; although in my case tight against the ceiling was what I could do.

Series VI EQ on the way ... should be there by Friday and will work perfectly with your speakers once you get it repaired. I just didn't have the time to mess with it right now. Glad to find it a happy home.

I am running series V 901's, so I was glad to pick up a matching Series V EQ off eBay. It was in mint shape and match's the 901's nicely but it ran me $125. Yes, the EQ makes all the difference in the world. I was surprised by the bass response of the newly EQ-ed 901's. Not a bad sound at all ... I ran them along side my Altec Model 14's and it was a nice match up. They mellowed out the Model 14's and are staying in the man cave. The "house system" now consists of the 901's, Altec model 14's and a set of 15" JBL subs. I will run the 901's with an SAE 250 wpc power amp and a Counterpoint 3.1 pre. The Sansui needs to go in to be checked out and probably recapped.

All said and done I am into the 901's $325 after the rebuild and the new EQ. I think for $200 plus the cost of the EQ repair you will come out great.
