Boston Acoustic A70? A little help please.

Just picked up a set of these. They are the 6ohm version. Woofers need to be refoamed. What would happen if I just looked for a replacement. Would an 8ohm or 4ohm 8" woofer work? There aren't too many 6ohm 8" drivers out there for sale. Thanks in advance.

Do the drivers measure open?

If not, I would try to refoam them rather than replace.

Good luck!

If you replace them, it's a great chance you'll alter the sound of these a little to very much. But even altering them a little will render them A70s in name only.

The 6 ohm version is the series 1. A great speaker, worthy of a refoam. You'll spend more money and have more headaches most likely, by replacing the woofers with something else.

Refoam 'em, and keep the nice flat response of them- it realy is the best way to go about it, in my opinion.

What did I tell you?

lol! Give them to me if you don't want to refoam them. I'll give it a shot.

These are vintage made in the early 80's if I'm not mistaken. I may try the refoam. I picked the A70's up from CL here in KC with a NAD 7125 receiver. The NAD is very minty and I like the sounds this little powerhouse puts out. Got the original boxes and manuals on the A70's and the NAD. $50 for both.. I love people that keep boxes.

Now the big question where to get the refoam kit? This will be my first attempt at refoaming. Nickrobotron has volunteered to assist. Or maybe be present for some moral support... :scratch2:

Look up members Re-Edger or Gordon W here at AK.

They supply foam.

You're doing the wise thing here.

I have a pair of A-70-II's and I would vote to put new surrounds on them. I just did a pair of 12" and it's an easy job with the right tools.

Bostons are EZ to refoam. With the stiff woofer, you can refoeam without removing the dust cap.

Concur with that. I just did a pair of A-60's and they were probably the easiest re-foaming I've ever done. The spiders seem very strong and hold the woofer cone centered very well, and they'll seem to even automatically recenter it while the glue is still wet.

post foam. well worth the time put into them and a very easy one to do as well

I thought those had poly woofers like my A60's :scratch2:

A70-II and A70-III have poly woofers. The original A70s are as kbott posted above... paper cone, fabric dustcap.

The original A60 also had paper cone woofers, like those... up to about 1985 or so, IIRC. If you have A60s with poly cones, they're A60-II or later.

Gordon.

An almost foolproof way to center the VC while you glue the outside edge to the basket is to apply a 60 cycle signal to the speaker -- less that 1 volt AC -- while you press the edge down. If you get any distortion while you are doing that then back off that last portion until the 60 cycle is normal.
