Boston Acoustics A200

Picked up a set of near mint A200’s in oak finish last night. Cabinets in great shape, woofers have been re-foamed at some time and still feel ok, grills are in great shape except previous owner changed colour of grill from original light colour to black, and all drivers look to be in great condition.

They sound quite good but sometimes I think the tweeter sounds a little hot. Today I will get into them to check the crossovers with intent to recap. Has anyone else with these experienced this sizzle on the high end? It’s not always there but on some signals I hear it.

Another question I have is after looking at many photos of A200’s on this site as well as other web sites, I can’t find a photo that has the Boston Acoustics wording in red on the front baffle like the ones I picked up. Anyone know if this has something to do with versions of this speaker?

Further to my original post, I thought I would reply since no one else did!

I recapped the speakers a few days ago. Absolute night and day. Even though all the electrolytics I took out did not measure all that bad (most within 5 to 10%) the new caps provided a way more balance sound and totally removed the hot sizzle in the tweeter. Bass is more defined. Did not want to spend too much on these so I used PP caps everywhere except for the woofer circuit where I just used some electrolytics. I am really enjoying the sound of these 44 year old speakers being driven with a Luxman L-530.

Good job getting those back up to speck. I have never seen that script on Boston speakers so would assume a previous owner may have taken some liberty with some labels. I really need to recap my A400's. I may look into it after I finish recapping some DLK/2's later this month. Enjoy :)

Back in the early 80’s I remember seeing the exact same lettering on pairs of Boston speakers when Sound Plus in Vancouver carried them.
