Just picked up some Boston Acoustics A70 speakers at the thrift store today for next to nothing. Of course the woofers need refoamed but they are in almost perfect condition otherwise. Anyone care to chime in and tell me what to expect sound-wise out of these? How about some specifications? This is the first pair of Boston Acoustics I've ever owned. They are very scarce here where I live from some reason. Thanks!

Proper surrounds can be had from either Rick Cobb (rcobb@tampabay.rr.com) or GordonW (AK member) - DO NOT use generic surrounds.
The A70 is a wonderful small speaker - you will be thoroughly impressed by its sound. No need (IMO) to do anything to the crossovers.

The "A" series are my favorites for the money. I think I have almost all of them except the A400. They do everything well and are never harsh. You should really dig 'em.

I found a pair in the thrift, too. Series I. The foam is partially intact on both. Played 'em for a few minutes... initial impressions: pleasantly sweet in the highs with a liquidy quality to the mids. I'm looking forward to refoaming as I have a feeling I'm really going to enjoy them a lot on jazz/classical/folk type stuff...

Bostons are some of the best at jazz that I've heard... You're in for a treat.
The thing about Boston A-series is that they were overachievers. Most of them just sounded better than they had a right to. The A-70 might be the best example.
I have some A-100s (later vinyl jobs) that I bought for half a c-note a few years back. I'm pretty sure they have incorrect surrounds but they still put a smile on my face.
A-70 and A-100 are very versatile for placement. Unlike most speakers, they like being backed against the wall. I have them sitting on the foundation of my half-basement, 3 ft off the floor. Upside-down the drivers are at just the right height.

I just put my newly acquired A70's into my step sons system and they do sound very nice. Detailed yet smooth with good bass for their size. He has his speakerlab sevens for rocking and these for the more sensitive listening. They are better sounding than I had anticipated.

Hell, for as plentiful (at least toward the East coast) and inexpensive as the classic Bostons are, everybody should have a pair or two in their collection. I'm listening to my A60s in my main system right now and I also have A40s in my workshop system.
I do agree with the previous posters that they're better with jazz than they are with rock. FWIW, I'm liking their presentation of the Herbie Hancock I'm hearing right now more than the Black Sabbath I had on earlier. :yes: The A60s are smooth all over and image nicely and I'm sure the bigger ones get even better if you have the room for them.

Thanks for all the comments! I've been in the hospital for about a week with a bone infection in the heel of my foot. Had to have surgery to remove about 2/3 of my heel bone (sucks real bad). When I came home I couldn't get out to roam the thrift stores for another 2 or 3 weeks. Then I got a walking cast so I could get around and get out of the house some. The first thrift store I went to had the Boston A70s and I grabbed them. I'll get to refoam them before too long. I'm still not able to do too much with my right arm now (no lifting, pulling etc). Long story but I have a PICC line in that arm for IV antibiotics for the next 3 weeks (6 weeks total). Halfway there and looking forward until it's all over... For some reason, you just don't see any Boston Acoustics around this part of Tennessee. I would expect to have seen at least a few pairs by now. I guess the people that do have them just hang on to them.
