Boston Acoustics best model? opinions needed

I just refoamed a pair of BA HD8's that i picked up quite reasonably,
needless to say the sound is very good from these, and i wondered what other AK'ers think are the best BA model.
This will affect my next search for vintage speakers to refurb.

Probably the A400, though they are hard to find. I have some A150's that are pretty good, but below the A200 and A400, but above the A40, A60, A100, and the T830's which I used to own.

I was going to post about this model, but see that you already have. This series from BA is highly desirable. My ex had a pair of VR-M80's and they were pretty incredible. They would put out a lot of very good sound from a small (but dense) cabinet. I'd LOVE to hear (or even own) a pair of VR-M90's.

BA also produced a very expensive 2-cabinet speaker (part of the Lynnefield series) that was supposed to be their flagship. I believe the model was 500L. If you are really looking for some of the best from BA, I would look for one of the ones I mentioned, but it will probably cost more than most of their vintage-y stuff.
 
I'm also going to say the A-400. I've owned a number of different BA speakers, and they have been the best to my ears. The T-1000 is a model I have yet to listen to, but some consider TOTL. I recently purchased a used pair of VR-M60 bookshelf speakers, and they are quite something for their size. I think the best value out there for used BA goes to the A-70. I have a fondness for that model, as it was my first pair of Boston Acoustics, purchased new in '86.
 
The A150's that I have are the best speakers I own. I am also impressed with the T830's.

Based on that, I would agree with others on the A400's or 200's, neither which I have had the pleasure to own. The smoothness is their redeeming quality.
 
I haven't heard the A400s but a friend has the A200s and those are something! Definitely a notch above my A100s (though the 100s are not "bad").

I can only imagine what the A400s would add. But I think that you'd be happy with the 200s if they came your way for a good price--you don't see those often.

I have some A400's, and yes they are some hard to beat speakers. I also have the VR-M90's on my computer setup. They really rock too!

Though a nice sounding speaker, the A70's were not TOTL for Boston Acoustics. So being the best would be a stretch for them. I have some A60 series II's that I am impressed by, but not the best.

No I have not, but I really don't need to, to make an educated guess that a mid grade Boston model is not their best one. It seems universally (mostly) agreed that they get better as you continue to go up the ladder so my guess is that the A70 is not even in the top 10.

I have however owned a pair of A150's for several years, and I also used to own a pair of T830's which both should, by all logic, be better than the A70, and neither of those models are close to Bostons best effort either when you factor in the rest of the A series, T series and numerous Lynnfield series speakers.

Anyway, we all have our own opinions and I'm sure the OP can gather what's most likely a highly prized model from all of the posts so far.:yes:
 
I have by no means listed to every model of BA speaker ever made (I doubt many of us have) but I do have a pair of VR-3's, which I believe were their flagship model for a little while. Very impressive speaker.

Oh- and the A70's are pretty sweet too, don't let anyone tell you otherwise. :thmbsp:

Just to note, I wasn't, nor did anyone else that I saw suggest the A70 wasn't a good speaker, it's just a fact that it isn't Bostons best speaker...well at least not according to the OP's question of what was Bostons best (overall) speaker.:thmbsp:

I'm sure that's the case. I actually have been giving my A-70's a good listen lately. I have them connected to my refurbed Sansui 9090 and it's a very sweet combination. It's actually kind of impressive what those mid-sized thin speakers can do.

Hopefully some day soon I can lug the VR-3's updstairs and connect them to the Sansui. I'm predicting a good match there.
