Found a pristine looking pair of Boston Acoustics A200's on Nextdoor of all places. Seller did not list model, just brand and cab dimensions. I knew they were A200 or A400 by the size so I played phone tag for a few days and finally set up a meet. On one of the calls the guy mentioned he had replaced a woofer, which scared me. I asked where the replacement came from and was relieved to hear he had sourced it from Boston Acoustics.
I got to the guy's house and he had them hooked up to a HT receiver playing TV programming. Source material was evening news, but they seemed to work. Since I had been reading up on them and now saw they were A200's I knew they were coming home with me, regardless of the lame demo.
I got them down into the dungeon with my son's help and hooked them up to a JVC integrated that has been my daily driver there lately. Played some early Yes, thinking it would present a good range. It sounded awful. Wondering what was wrong with that record, I grabbed a Leo Kottke disk. Still sounded like ass.
Checked the owner's manual I had downloaded. It says there is a 2.5A fuse for the mid and 2A for the tweet. I pulled one of the fuses and saw an obvious break in a 1.5 amp fuse. The other fuse was 2 amps, but tested good. Other speaker was the same deal. I found a couple of 2 amp fuses in my inventory and swapped them in, though they were a different type. Played Leo again and it was fantastic!
My question is, did BA change values of their fuses somewhere along the line or did somebody underfuse these? I went out and bought 1.5, 2, and 2.5 amp fuses to restock, but now am not sure what to put in these, or if it even matters with moderate listening levels. I know these speakers have a following here, so hopefully someone with info sees this and chimes in!
