Boston album ? Best sound ?

I have it, and I think it sounds terrific. I also bought the recent 1980g vinyl reissue, and the Nautilus sounds better, to me.

i have that one, and i have a few other pressings. You want a first pressing that says WLY on the deadwax. It sounds better than the half speed one.

For the Boston debut, I actually listen to the Sony Mastersound gold CD. IMO, that one came out perfect. HUGE soundstage and warm, smooth sound with FAT-sounding drums. Like listening to a straight digital transfer of the master. I do like the US 1st-pressing LP too.

For some reason, the drums sound way-better than they do on the follow-up, "Don't Look Back" (For some reason, they sound like cardboard on the 2nd album... Perhaps they went a little overboard with the processing... Who knows, but the 1st album has a lot more depth). That said, I prefer the Sony Mastersound CD for the 2nd album as well.

All of the Boston albums were absolutely fantastic, especially Boston and Third Stage. Those are my two favorites.

I don't have that one, but I have the 180g one from Legacy that sounds great to me.

btw, I just bought 2 sealed Rush albums...

I'm so sorry... :P Never could stand Rush, they just always seemed to try way too hard to sound cutting edge to me.

Beware that they may be opened albums that some asswipe shrink-wrapped to make a buck, happened with me buying a Steppenwolf--The Second album once

$40 for a record? Heck I got both of my Boston S/T albums for a buck a piece. I can't fathom a special version sounding 40x better. I also squeak when I walk and the notion of paying more than 5 bucks for a used album is just not something I can process.

Did your albums come with sleeves/jackets ? :lmao:

Condition (vinyl and jacket) is everything when looking at buying old, desireable records. Most of the time, I like to pay extra for mint outer jackets. Some people dont care, some do.

I hit the flea markets for my vinyl nowadays. I can't afford the reissues, plus I'm a fan of original pressings. Just have to know what to look for. Got the Sony Mastersound from a friend. I just think, as far as digital versions go, that one is the bee's knees. In fact, I have yet to hear a Sony Mastersound CD I DIDN'T like. They really-knocked that series out of the park.

For "Moving Pictures", I know the original Bob Ludwig-mastered LP is the way to go (A lot of people go for the Dutch LP because it has the same Ludwig mastering, plus it was pressed on better vinyl than the North American LP's, but the US and Canadian pressings should both be the same mastering, I think... For early albums, I would say go with the Canadian issues, but the US 1st-pressing LP's should sound good as well).

Let me know what you think. I love that disc.

Oh, regarding the old Mastersound vinyl, I'm on the fence about it. I used to have the "Wish You Were Here" Mastersound, and it kills me that I sold it (Had to at the time), but I think the Sony Mastersound gold CD series was much-more-consistent than the Mastersound vinyl (I can't remember which, but for one of those two series, they had contacted Steve Hoffman and another guy and said they wanted them to do an audiophile series and to send a list of the albums they would want to do... Then they never heard back from them, and some time later, they see the Mastersound series with the exact same titles that Hoffman and co. had picked... I guess it must have been the gold CD's... He told that story a while back on a thread on his website... I thought it was funny, but the gold CD's came out great though). All this said, I don't remember if I've ever heard the "Boston" Mastersound LP before. I've heard the "Don't Look Back" Mastersound LP and CD, but not the LP of the debut.

For me, $40 for a used record is way too much. Don't matter who, where or on what it was pressed. The 180gr is vailable at a lower price and sounds just as good as the original issue did way back in 76.

I love that avatar picture.... The look on the dog's face is brilliant.

I have to agree on the price of vinyl. Unless it's one of my top 5 desert island albums or something, I can't see spending a ton of money on Fleabay for a sealed copy when I can find a used copy with mint vinyl for less. I would pay more for some of the old audiophile pressings, but it depends on the mastering. For me, it's all about the condition of the vinyl. Cover-condition is a distance second.

Simple answer! Orange Label Epic early pressing. Look for "Mastered By Capitol" on both sides with "wly" or "Wally" in the deadwax. The best attainable. Very findable in near mint condition for under $12. My own example cost me $.99. And is high VG cover, Near Mint LP. And has "Wally" both sides. I owned the Mastersound half-speed for one day, returned it as I found it too bright on top.

I have several copies of the first Boston LP, including the 180g Legacy pressing. I find the Legacy pressing sounds great to my ears, so the others are stashed :) I also have the Sony Mastersound Gold CD of "Don't Look Back" and find it very pleasing to sit back and listen to. "Don't Look Back" takes me back to high school as before our football games, one of my teammates used to put on that cassette and we would relax before the game
