Bottlehead Crack?

Has anyone built one of these?

At a little over $200 these seem like quite a good deal, and it looks fairly simple.

I have mucked about with resurrecting old tube amps in the past, but never built from a kit.

Bottlehead claims these are an excellent starter kit. Thinking about giving it a go, to use with my Beyer 880s.

Sounds interesting but - did I miss a link or something ...?
 
I wouldn't buy a kit like that.

I would get quality parts and make my own design like they did out of one of the receiving tube manual.

Not everybody can look at a schematic and build from it. Thats why Bottlehead makes kits, because they cater to that crowd in general. Besides, theres nothing stopping one from upgrading the parts to better quality down the line. :thmbsp:

Maybe Santa left him some coal in his stocking.

The bottle head stuff is by and large rather nicely done modifiable kits. Its well worth 200.00 to get into tubes IMHO and they have excellent technical support as well.

You might want to check out the DIY Audio Prospects web-site?

I built a 12au7/IRF510 headphone amplifier from a schematic they had posted.
VERY simple schematic to follow and relatively cheap, even with using decent components like ELNA capacitors.
My 12 volt DC power supply was from Parts Express for UNDER $20.

the only reason I am a little harsh about them is people miss the point with these kits.

they are gear towards education. Not application.

I particularly get their stuff pushed my way by frustrated audiophiles that haven't been trained to solder, or construction techniques and it was all because of parts quality. Some of the cases, tthey did something wrong and I had to fix thier other gear because of the mistakes of the novice.

Heaven forbid someone has a little fun with these kits. I am missing your point actually because you are advocating that total novices roll their own stuff from some random build someplace.

These kits are a easy way for 200.00 to get into tubes and building techniques.

And since MANY people have built and modded them support is easy to find. I don't think Dynaco is all that stock myself as a example. Its the community and the broad swath of people modding and building Dynaco that leads to some very nice mods and sound in the end.

Negative commentary notwithstanding, I have heard nothing but good things about Bottlehead up until now. And, I believe, as previously stated, one can upgrade parts later on as one desires.

I'm seriously considering the Bottlehead unit. After looking around, there are very few kits that provide as much at that price point.

I don't see how you can go wrong for a couple bills, and modding is the fun part.:yes:

X2. Ive never heard of Bottlehead being for research purposes either. The people that build them want to build a proven design with instructions that are easy to follow. I can name tons of people, both experienced builders and greenhorns, that say their Bottlehead kit is kick ass. I dont know anybody other than the poster in this thread that thinks otherwise.
