can anyone with first hand experience tell me if bottlehead foreplay II with stock pots have noise issues? how good is it compared to some of the vintage preamps such as eico, dynaco, fisher, or scott? i've heard foreplay III, but not the II. how different are they from each other? thanks in advance for any input.

Bottlehead has a helpful and active forum on their web site. Yeah, opinions may be biased over there but I think you could search and get your questions answered over there.

From my experience, Bottlehead uses crap quality switches and pots. The only weakness in some otherwise great gear.

that was kinda my impression.
the stock pots seem quite bad. i'm gonna see if there is pot upgrade....
i hope i don't have to join their forum to peek...

http://www.audioasylum.com/forums/bottlehead/bbs.html seems to be a free forum.

I picked up a Foreplay I that had some nice pots in it. Seems to be one of the first upgrades folks do to them. Really easy too as you just buy a couple correct pots and put em in.

These preamps are so modified, keeping from doing more than the volume pots may be difficult as each change can be heard. There are folks that have recapped, bypassed the caps and bypassed the bypass caps, along with outboard power supplies. All kinds of stuff.
