Bought Infinity speakers.... Need help/support

similost

Rockin and Rollin....
Went to an estate sale, and saw a nice looking pair of Infinity bookshelf-ish sized speakers. Just a little smaller than something like Sansui SP-100s or so...
I couldn't pass them up because of the price... pretty cheap... and hey, they were Infinity

They have an 8" woofer, and some type of foam dome tweeter. THe woofer is a black plastic of something similar. Pretty thick material. There is no model number on them that I can see..

I plugged the up and turned them on... WOAH.. pretty nice sound from a pair of pretty small speakers... or at least what I consider small.

Then just as I was expecting, the foam starts to come apart on the woofers with a pretty low volume. They were intact, but I know that wouldn't last long... about 15 seconds matter a fact..

So now for my help needed... How do I figure out what model these are, and how do I know what foam too buy?

Can someone help me get the right foams for these and help me figure out what model they are?

I didn't get any pictures yet, but I can this evening.

I got the foam for my eight inch Infinity woofers from e-bay seller myaudioaddiction. They were model specific and the seller seemed knowledgable. Maybe if you contact him, he can offer some advice.

The pics should increase the chances of identifying your speaker model. From your description, it probably won't be pictured on the Bobby Shred or German Infinty sites; they mostly confine themselves to the earlier models from the Arnie Nudell era. With a foam dome tweeter, yours was probably a later-year model. Does it say "Polydome" on the driver surround/plate, with or without a suffix? Grey color or black?

I see a LOT of later small-ish Infinity bookshelf speakers in the used-audio market here. Mostly they have fake oak (vinyl) coverings, and are often okay, but sonically not very remarkable when compared with the earlier models with EMITs and Watkins woofers, like some of the Q series. Still, it doesn't hurt to give 'em a listen, when they are cheap! :D Since you said yours sounded nice, it would be good to find out what they are... I'd love to learn that Infinity made some really good-sounding speakers after the Modulus series (which I'd consider their last truly remarkable effort). Actually, I have a pair of later-era (circa 1991) Infinitesimals which aren't too bad, either.

Thanks, I looked there, and didn't see anything like what I found.

I did find this post here that look like them, but hard to tell... Same black woofer, and single tweeter two way speakers. I do have a foam dome on mine.. The box looks different though. Looks liek the box in these pictures is bullnozed, or rounded towards the front. Mine are all square edges...

Look carefully on the terminal plate:

I have a set of Infinitys exactly as you describe.. Polycell (foam)Tweeter with 8" Poly Woofer. Mine are model "Reference Two" (Those have a round plate with the words "Reference Two" arc'd over the top. (Near impossible to see.. I had to put on my glasses)

Thanks for the info. Nope, I didn't have my glasses on either, so that may be why I didn't see the model on the terminal. Mine has a round block too. It does have the paper tag on it like the one in the picture, but nothing on it looked like a model.

I'll take a look at mine this evening. I bet mine are the Reference Two also...

If they are, what's the consensus of the quality of the sound from these? From my very short listen, I thought they sounded pretty good.

my first pair of Infinity speakers fit this description, and were named RS 325. they were surprisingly pleasant sounding little speakers, and I sort of wish I still had them

I just looked up the 325.. it has a 6.5" woofer, so that can't be what I have. Mine has the 8", but it is good to hear you say you really liked yours.

I think a part of the reason why I didn't hesitate to buy these (I never buy smaller speaker cabs) was because I have an Infinity system in my truck, and it rocks!!! and sounds great doing it, so I figured I can't lose I guess..

The tweeters are great. In fact, I'm using them in a pair of ESS cabinets. When you pull the woofer you'll be impressed by the wonderfully undersized magnet and cheesy stamped sheet metal basket. The Polycone enjoys becoming brittle and as with mine, decides to crack from coil to surround for no apparent reason. I've seen this on a few of the Infinity 8's.. the 6's don't seem to have the cracking problem.. perhaps because the material can't handle the increased diameter? They sounded nice (when they worked). Before spending the money to refoam them see if you can grab a pair of JBL 8" woofs at auction to stick in there. I've done this before and I think they sound a lot better.. not to mention they're a lot more durable.

The things you describe are the main reasons I usually stay away from smaller consumer style speakers and usually look more along the lines of pro style speakers..

I figure spending $25 or so for foams won 't hurt me.. They will either make good garage speakers or for the wife's office until I can get hers built.

Can you take photos? That will help us help you determine what these are.

Also, Rick Cobb (rcobb@tampabay.rr.com) should have the correct foam surrounds. Please don't use them until they've been properly refoamed.

sounds like you may have sterlings maybe the ss-2003 have a polycell tweeter and an 8" IMG woofer a generic 8" angled foam surround from a place like MAT works fine, I've refoamed about 10 pairs of infinity woofers and all they ever took were standard sized foams

We're always on the same page, Simi. Speakers like this are closet stackers good for something one day. The real stuff is in the Living Room.

Here you go.. $6 each for surrounds. I've used this company before. Fast shipping and high quality.

It took me a while to realize that the Infinity model number is on the plastic terminal plug thingie. I actually did see it, but I didn't think they'd have made a different model of the plastic for each different speaker model!
I have SS-2001's I recently refoamed, pic in that big "Infinity pics" thread - other than the expected lack of bass in such a small speaker, I really like the sound.

Just checked, and it was written in the cup. They are SM-102

Thanks for the help everyone, I'm sure I can find what I need now.
