Bought Some JBL 4410As...

...for $50. A couple of bashed corners, some scratches, several grill pegs broken, one hole in the fabric on a corner. Drivers look good, other than a dent in a tweeter dome (how do you dent a tweeter through those grates?).

I know I've read that the original grills might still be available; anybody have a source for the pegs?

I don't think the dented dome will affect the sound, or will it? Is it worth the trouble/risk to try to fix it?

Good buy? :D

I missed a set in my area today that was listed for """""$40""""" !!! I am SO pissed !! Missed by half hour........... They were the exact same model as yours there. I was going to listen to them for a few and then decide wether to flip them on the bay or not. Oh well.I think even Tom B would have done that.............. :D
 
Very good buy! Check the sockets to see if the broken pegs are still in them - you can remove and glue them back in place - it worked for me on my 4410.

Some of them are; not sure if they all are. I think I saw a post (from you?) about gluing them.
 
Nice find,the tweeter screen cover might be held in by a small rubber cord.If so you can remove the cord with a pick of some sort.As far as the dent goes,and I haven't tried this yet myself,take a tube of the same diameter as the silver cone.Place it over the silver cone and suck gently.Really....I saw it on Youtube.....

It's pretty easy to remove the screws and take the front cover off, which lets you push the dome out from behind. When I tried this, the dome shattered due to all the creases. I would not have wanted the chunks of titanium to end up in my lungs...:no:
Oh, the domes are still available for a few 20's from online suppliers. They come with the foam damper that has probably gone soft by now too.
Google D8R052TI and the first three hits have decent prices.

I have one that was dented and it pressed out from the rear OK, a tiny few dents remain, but that's about the best you can do once it's bent. I bought a pair of new ones so they match...

I've heard of that; I may try it. With something covering the end of the tube. ;)

Thanks; I was thinking about that. One of the places has them for $48 each. Guess I should take them apart and see what happens, and how the foam is too.

I made foam plugs out of a sheet of similar foam using a 1/2" hole punch, before I found out that the new ones came with...

Hopefully the dome survives being pressed out.
 
I replaced the foam behind my domes with some foam that I cut from the covering of a coat hanger that came from a dry cleaner. It may not be exactly the right material, but it was available. I glued it to the pole piece with Aileen's tacky glue and so far, so good.

There is a thread over at LHF about aileens glue holding the foam in comp drivers.
I think it ended up being mold from the glue.
I will look for the thread.

Edit: The thread was locked and some of the content is gone. Sorry. But AK'er Cosmos I think is the one who had the problem or would know who it was as it was his measurement thread.

I advise replacement eventually.Those domes can be hard to pull out without a little power. I used the floor vac with a rubber tube sealed on to the hose and a hole in the host so that I could regulate pressure with my thumb. It took a lot of pressure and did not just pop out but had to be massaged from the edges in toward the center until it finally stayed out. I did it with a pair of Theils to see if it could be done. After some study on the dynamics of the dome vibrations I have concluded that the repaired one could not possibly produce the same wave motion as the original and so I am looking for replacements. On the other hand since nobody really knows what sounds better until it is tried these could sound better!

The 052Ti has a hollow pole piece that the foam slides into, it takes about 1" thick foam to have enough height to contact the back of the dome. Thus the 1/2" or so hole punch I used on a sheet of 1" soft foam.
