Bought something stupid... Sony PS-8750

AKer approved shipping...

Maybe we need to contact "local" Akers and have them pick up these kinds of items in person, do the packing and then send them on their way. At least stuff like this wouldn't happen. I've shipped at least a half dozen turntables, some very delicat B&O units and never had any problems,. Even used two separte packages for an old DUAL. There should be enough of us in most major locations to allow a local pickup.

Moderators, would a list of countries and cities and members be possible for a thread? Something to make it easy to locate a member in a certain area.

I'd even be happy to shell out an extra 20 (maybe 10 for shipper and 10 for AK) in order to have a trusted AKer pick up an item in person. I may even buy a few more items this way.

Just my 2 cents for the day.

Good idea!! Anyone headed from Philadelphia area to KC that would haul my 57 pound B-2 amp out to EW? I'd be happy to pay $50 towards gas to avoid having it tossed around by our friends at Fedex/UPS/DHL/USPS.

No, I no longer have the unit as I had to turn it in to the post office when filing a claim. I am still looking for another PS-8750. It's been about a year since this happened and still no luck.

Jon,
Sorry to hear that - check the German eBay once in a while as there's plenty of vintage Sony and serious collectors there. I must have seen two (three?) there this year...
If you need help with the German, do not hesitate to ask!

Small step-up/down transformers are inexpensive. And, generally speaking, these units used the same transformers and multiple taps so only have to resolder a couple of wires. Not always true, but often is. It could be more complex if its operation is frequency dependant. 50Hz vs. 60 Hz. But, if DD, then is not a problem. And changing the pulley solves the speed issue on a BD TT.

Axel - how does one access another countries eBay listings?

When doing a search on eBay, do advanced search, chose available from any country. If looking for a specific make model, don't forget to do a search in all catagories. For example, eBay Germany's catagory names are in German, so you can not do a worldwide search in Consumer Electronics as that catagory does not exist on the German Site. It is there, but in German language.

That is how I found repl parts for my Dahlquist DQM 7 speakers (they use Magnat drivers).

There are also some pretty good online translation pages that will help you convert languages so you can understand descriptions. A good one I use is: http://translation.langenberg.com/

Have good new year all.

Cheers,
Joe

Sony being Sony, there are exceptions but all PS-8750 (along many other Sony units) sold in Europe were multi-voltage and 60/50Hz compatible ; the ones in the US weren't. The multi-tap block is under the platter.

The German eBay has categories aplenty for audio ; check the Rarität (rarities), Highend (clear enough :-) or Verstärker (integrated amps), Endverstärker (power amps), Vorverstärker (preamps), Plattenspieler (TTs)... close languages, ain't it?
Most of the interesting stuff, whatever the brand, is listed under "rarities" and "highend"...

AAAAaarggghhh!!! Just got the PS-8750 in the mail. It was totally destroyed. The seller packed the unit upside down. Opening the top of the box had the platter, then the unit flipped over showing the bottom. Pulling it out showed the dust cover completely shattered. The tonearm was broken from the pivot, the needle point bearings were snapped. The arm rest was bent down, along with a side counterweight. The arm could be lifted about an inch or moved sideways at the pivot about 1/2 inch. The box was barely large enough to fit the unit, being about two inches larger than the unit itself. I had informed the seller to pack it specifically the way the Turntable factory recommends, with double boxing. The only thing I can say is that the shipping screws were set.

I have contacted the seller and he will send me a refund.

Just great!!! Another irreplaceable vintage unit destroyed through an INCOMPETENT Seller on E-Bay!!

Ouch!! Lost two myself....

I sucks when you loose a turntable that the seller packed poorly. Never buy anything on the Bay from Brandphoenix. Biggest lier on EBay!!! :thumbsdn: This jerk cost me 100 bucks. No packing material. Trashed the arm, dust cover-even the head shell. Blammed UPS when he sent it US mail. Dumb s**t!!

The other one was a Miracord. The seller was nice, did not know how to pack. Should have asked for $$$ but did not. At least by getting two more of them I recovered my costs. Sold off one and got my $100 back this way. Gave a base away and the guy sent me $75 :D After paying the shipping--$33, I figured I had about $20 in the remaing table. Then gave it away. Lady I grew up with. Set her up with an entire system. The guestroom was without a system for a whole 15 minutes.

Too bad about the Sony. While not a big Sony fan (hate this Vaio laptop) that table was a decent one. That seveal of their amps from that period were quite good :thmbsp: Can she be fixed? My Brandphoenix Pioneer PL45 was shot  and a total lose.

Happy New Year anyway,

Eric

...30 years or more separate the PS-8750 and a Vaio - different era alltogether!
