We set this Boulton Music System up in the store, anytime you have to use a key to start your gear its cool. These system were well built, after some bench time she puts out 150 + watts @ 8 ohms with a very nice THD of 0.01%. Just thought members would like seeing a working Boulton.

Rod, back in HS days, the parents of my best friend had a Boulton system installed in their house. It was the earlier style equipment with oxblood leather front panels.

Very unusual equipment to be sure.

GLWS.

I'm a little disappointed this thread is not about this guy's system.

Nice! Back in the early 80's I used to work for a very wealthy and famous family, and when they built their new custom "home" (read - mansion) they installed a Boulton music system with a master unit that looked very much like that. It was an awesome system (I got to use it once in a while when they were gone for the summer) and I remember it could play different sources in any room at the same time by using the built in remote control unit keypads, one of which was in every main room.

The turntables could even seek individual tracks on an album from the remote keypads. The turntables had Stanton 681 EEE "calibration standard" cartridges on them. Wonder if that system is still in that house...I know they moved to another custom home a while ago. First and last time I ever heard of Boulton music systems until now!

These systems were huge money back in the day, we have the key pad but it was to hard rewiring for our use.

I seem to recall reading something proprietary about the wiring of Bolton equipment to speakers. :dunno:

And yes, their systems were ultra expensive. A recent completed eBay listing of a Boulton system shows an invoice totaling ~ $8K - back in '72. That would've bought a boatload of McIntosh back then. :D

Over the last two years we've had a chance to buy several of these systems, they're very cool but the cost to retro them for a one room system has driven the value down. That said, anytime you use a key to start your system it's a cool system.
