$100 for each driver or each speaker cabinet?

Track down used bozak woofers. Otherwise, I wouldn't bother.
Agreed. Choosing random woofers is unlikely to have a happy ending unless you model them based on the driver's Thiele/Small parameters and the box dimensions.

ETA: Whoa, these cost $4000/pair in their day. That was more than the price of a new car then. Might be worth spending a little to get them back to original condition.

If you move in the direction of Bozak drivers (which I would recommend) you could do something a little different than you might expect. Instead of replacing all 8 woofers (each is an 8 ohm woofer) you could get two per side of the 16 ohm version. Then get two midrange, 1 per side. I'm guessing you have all the tweeters? That would be 16 of those. You could even do with fewer tweeters (two per side), especially if you planned to listen to these in a smaller room.

Now what you'd have here is Bozak Symphony components in a larger cabinet. Bozak woofers love all the additional volume you can give them. Back in the day, these were also sold as panel speakers. You would mount the panels to the walls with the room on the other side of the wall serving as the speaker enclosure!

I built single woofer Bozaks in some Symphony cabinets and they sound fantastic. This is a lot like what I'm proposing you do here but one step down in size.

You could go this route spending, well, 1/2 as much as you would making it all original layout and I bet they would sound fantastic!

And no, you couldn't do this for $100 per cabinet but you might be able to pull this off for $500 total. Maybe moving some tweeters could offset some cost. Wait, do you have the crossovers with it? That will add $ if you don't.

Yeah, large. If 4 woofers gave the big sound, maybe 1 will give the clean sound. Less noise, more extension?

Quiet, I think you’re right. Had a friend over listening to my single woofer, 4-way Symphony. After an hour of listening, he asked “will my Concert Grands sound this good?” They weren’t wanting for anything. We are beginning work on a pair of CG he recently acquired.

Now, to be honest, I’ve yet to hear a pair of CG in all their glory. I do have parts for a Symphony, so I’ll see what a dual woofer setup sounds like. Just don’t have the volume the Grands have.

Loudspeaker design is a complex discipline requiring advanced engineering skills. The driver compliment, the individual characteristics of each, the cabinet and its design and especially the crossover network - must all be designed with respect to one another. One item changed, all is changed- and rarely for the better. The odds of beating the manufacturer at his own game are slim to none.

A pair of very clean CG was sold within the last year by Audio Classics for ~ $2K which I suspect would be far less it would cost than putting this pair back to OEM spec. If maximum SQ for the money is the goal, the alternatives are infinite - both in quantity as well as quality.

This is what I will recommend as well.

I would try a single woofer in the big cabinets. And I would get them from B 301 Tempo's. And I'd try the mids out of them too. Maybe even the crossovers.

Or, start with this and build up.

You know, Bozak used to suggest that we start with the larger cabinet, whether the symphony #1 or the CG, and one woofer and tweeter pair; and then build up to the full system over time as finances permit. It's as good an idea now as it was then!

But don't put in crap woofers! It won't really be a Bozak.
