Bozak general question

I have a pair of bozak 302a speakers with the moorish cabs. I like them, and was fortunate to have Pat Tobin do the cross overs. I recently saw a pair of bozak grand concerto 4101b style. They are large, very, very large. Is anyone familiar with the bozak line and the sound of the speakers as you move up from my model. I didn't get the grands, since I don't know if my room would have been big enough, and there is no way in hell my back could move them. But I am curious about the sound of the bozaks as you go into the bigger speakers. Thannks Norm

We need to know how big your listening space is to determine if they were to big for your room.as a aside i never really let room size determine what i put in it. It might not be optimum but i ve had altec 19's and even my bozak symphonies in a 12x12 room.:yes:

I have a set of 302a's and the Symphonys, 1 step down from the CG. Depending on the date of manufacture, they may use the same drivers or a variant. Deeper bass and extended high end and just bigger sound. Also, at similar spls, the larger speakers sound like they are loafing, not laboring at all. Not that the 302s are stressed. Think of a v-8 at 50mph vs a 4-cyl at 50 mph.

Also, b/c the tweeters are higher and slightly offset in the array the dispersion is better.

Having multiple woofers increases impact significantly. Really noticeable with my Symphonys w/ 2 woofers. I've heard the CG in a big enough room and the impact is awesome but not false or bumped up like most speakers. The CG came with an optional bi-amp system and in a properly setup system, it is about as good as it gets even against newer speakers.a

Radioactive, I did not realize you have a set of Symphonys. You also have a thing for Philips. I like your taste.

The 104s should be pretty easy to fabricate and any active x-over that covers the crossover range could sub for the 106, maybe the Sony.

My room is 13 X 14 1/2 feet with 8'10" ceilings. The concert grandes are no longer for sale. Would the symphony's be a step up from the 302a's I currently own, or would there be little difference in sound stage/bass extension, etc. Thanks Norm,
Oh and if a pair of concert grands ever become available, what's a fair price. From what I have researched, they don't come up for sale that often and prices are quite variable.

Having both, I can tell you it is definitely a step up. That extra woofer, 6 more tweeters and far larger cabinet makes for a big difference in sound. Your room will handle the Symphonys or the system between the 302 and Symphony, the 305 that uses the 2 woofers, 1 midrange but only 4 tweeters in a smaller cabinet than the Symphonys. The 305 is quite rate, though.

You mention the N106 bi-amp filter or crossover. The N106 for my B-4005 Centuries seems to have failed and I just ordered a simple RCA splitter to get signal from the C26 preamp to the two MC2505 power amps then out to the Bozaks. I plan to cross each right and left from each amp to either the hi or low of the crisscrossed speaker but that may be silly or overthinking the situation. Not sure what 70s techno wizardry hides inside that N106 box.

I started out with b-4000 symphony speakers with the famous 8 inch woofer as a midrange but then up dated to the true 8 inch midrange. I was using them as monitor speakers and they just weren't strong enough or extended for me in the bass below 80hz. So up graded to B410 moorish grands in late 69. The highs were a little week above 10 KHZ so I added 4 Celestion 2000 series super tweeters to each. The response in my set up with very little 1/3 octave equalization was from about 23 HZ to 18.5 KHZ, but I started smoothy rolling off the highs around 3500 HZ being down 6 db at 16000 hz. Today I still tri amp the speakers. One amp for the woofers one amp for the mid and tweeters and one amp for the super tweeters. The speakers are now part of a 7.0 HT system. I use a low boy 4005 for the center and with two super tweeters it is basiclly flat from 32 to the same 18.5 KHZ with the preferred rolloff. My rear speakers are also 4005's and the side speakers are B313's which are 302's in a book shelf cabinet. So the bass stops arounf 50 HZ with the 313's. The rear and sides using the original passive crossovers. Depending where and how your spekers are located they will just reach below 40 HZ which is all you need for old analog LP recordings. But CD and Direct to disc recordings can really challenge 302's I am not fond of the 305 series Bozak speakers. You go from a 302 to a 4000 or 4005. I prefer line array tweeters by the way which get the sound up off the floor. My center channel 4005 whih is bi-amped gets a real challenge being the center channel speaker. You want the Bozaks with the ceramic woofers as they can handle 36 watts RMS each for the woofers where the older alnicos are rated at 25 watts. The alnico drivers are preferred by some for the more musical style of classical sound. I don't use subs with my HT system with the rears and cener reaching 32 HZ and the Grands reaching 23 HZ +/- 2 db. How ever they don't compete at all with My Mcintosh line arrays which are rated down to 16 HZ with ten to 20 db less distortion. 1812 Overture by Telarc may sound great on a pair of Grands, but the Mcintosh speakers are do much better with their HPLD woofers and mid ranges. Yes the Mac speakers are 6 db less efficient bit at 15 ft listening distance the difference is only 1 db in out put at my centralized seating position from the two different left and right speakers. I have chaged things a bit since this photo was taken. The Grands have been pointed toward the center recliner now. Twisting the speakers reduced the bass out put about 3 db at 25 HZ. Remember most spekers loose 6 db when you double the distance where line array speakers only loose 3 db with every doubling of distance. The Line array speaker clarity is much higher than most other types of speakers .
