Bozak question: ported?

So I spotted a pair of Bozak B207b‘s mounted in what might be homemade cabs. They are semi-local to me and I have thought about checking them out. But the question I have is about the port holes. I don’t recall seeing port holes in other Bozaks with the B207b‘s, but I fully admit to NOT being an authority on the subject of Bozak speakers.

Comments appreciated,

This looks good to me.

I prefer the sound of ported woofers.

You can always block if off if you don't like the sound.

Friend just built 18" JBL subs and he felt they were tuned too low.

"Just stuff the port until you like it"... Fixed!

Hay, it's not a factory cabinet. The B199 is not designed to be used in a ported cabinet. You lose your tuneful lower bass notes, the efficiency of the driver. Rudy designed them to be used in an infinite baffle design. This forum is awash in advice in how to set them up properly. Or we can work you through it. Otherwise I'd pass on it, not worth your time.

Thank you for the replies!

So, in essence an infinite baffle is a closed box (cabinet) with enough volume that it can’t act as an acoustic suspension. The speakers own suspension is the driving force with no interference from the air in the box.

An acoustic suspension speaker (in general) is a closed box that has less volume but just enough to get a spring effect from the internal air pressure. The air pressure is the suspension.

Question: If the volume of the box is sufficient, and you closed the port hole, could it work correctly as an infinite baffle set up? Not necessarily saying I’m going to do it, but just questioning at this point.

Hey,
Sorta, and more. Bozaks infinite baffle uses it's internal design to dissipate the backwaves of the woofer making the woofer think it's in a much larger cabinet than its in. One of the cool things about Bozak is us fans applaud modding and fiddlin. So yeah, we can probably work with your existing cabinet and make it right. You'd want it to be 2 cubic feet or more. And you'd want room to add the B209B midrange driver. Thats a 6" hole on the front baffle there's somewhere. You see, Bozaks make a really lousy 2 way. The B199 woofer has cone breakup in the 800hz range, not cool. That's of no consequence when in a proper 3 way with the crossover set to 400hz. But running full range? Blech, you can do better.

Do the tweeters have shiny dust caps? If so, walk away. Those are the paper cone 1950s tweeters, not what you want. You want all black aluminum cone tweeters, far superior.

In regards to the tweeters, are you referring to something like this (though they kind of look like they may have been black at one point)?

Egads. That's not what I was talking about. That said, those are the preferred later aluminum cone tweeters. They're missing much of the paint on the cones. If they work, they can be lightly sprayed with latex flat black paint. Not a big deal, just cuts down on ringing. How are the cabinets? 2 or more cubic feet? Hopefully around 4 or 5 cubic feet worth. Well built, braced?
