Bozaks in Open Baffle

I put some Bozak 207s in open baffles today and didn't like the sound at all. Very thin bass and when I turned up the bass controls the drivers quickly distorted. Corner placement gave a little better bass but still no good.

They also have a certain shrillness that is excited by some passages.

These things have to go, if anybody wants them just come and get them.

The OB's do look nice, though...

Kind of small (narrow) though, for any bass... is the Qts of that woofer high enough for an OB?

Your baffle is WAY to small. That's why there is no bass. The shrillness may be the same issue as you will have a lot of cancellation at many frequencies causing issues and peeks / valleys.

Yeah 88, I know the baffle is small. I used what was available to try to get a handle on the Bozaks and the possibilities.

Frankly if one were to need a much bigger baffle one would probably be better off to build a proper 4 cubic foot sealed box. I think the driver is unsuited to this use.

I've heard Wolverine 12s sounding quite robust on similarly sized baffles.

I wonder how a set of those would sound in Karlson cabs?:scratch2:

Come get em and you can find out. Nice time of year for a drive.I don't think they're Karlson material though.

Couldn't a larger baffle be percieved by having sides on the existing baffle? Maybe just something to help reduce cancelation. Try some strips of cardboard just to do a quick and dirty trial of sorts.

If somebody wants to do a real road trip, i have the correct bozak cabinets for those................... same deal come get em.

Flip them over and tilt them back about 10 degrees. Bass will improve greatly.

No dice EJ. Laying them in their sides increased the bass slightly as did placing them tight into the room corners ala PWK. But not enough.

Nah, I don't think so. If so I think I'd get better bass, afterall the Carver Amazing didn't use a big baffle but it had proper woofers for the job.

In any event the ole 605s are hooked up again.

I guess the woofers just don't have the QTs to do OB.

Does anybody now the specs for these drivers?

Open baffle, full range Bozaks, $600 System

I have put together a full range system in open baffle, which is phenomenal in a rec room or cottage. Just $600.

The Bozak woofers with tweeters and crossover are $80 each on e Bay
The FM tuner, not shown, is an analog Nikko Gamma 1, about $75 but hard to find now.
Amp is a APPJ tube amp, with volume control, and EL84 stage, about $250 from Hong Kong.
CD player is a Sony PS 1. They assigned their best CD engineer to this project. Mine was $40 new in box.

I bought a 4' x 8' board at Home Depot, 19mm thick, and had them cut it into two 4' x 4' pieces. That was $50, or could be higher with a nice veneer.

The Bozaks were inserted into center cuts (about 13" diameter) with 8 bolts for rigidity.

I located these in two corners, so each has 5-6 cubic feet of space behind, and an open top.

The 3.5 watt per channel tube amplifier is completely adequate, with two caveats.

If you want mind numbing heavy metal, it's not this set up;

Some very well recorded CD's are at a low level, and could use a 15 watt amplifier. I have only found one of these, Calvary Grand Organ Dedication, Dan Miller organist, Charlotte, N.C.

There are no tone controls, just a volume control. Switching FM to CD is done by changing RCA plugs on the back. A minor inconvenience, but a caveat for guests.

The sound is full, complete, and open. Having the tweeters in front of the woofer is a distinct advantage for cohesive sound, at a fraction of the cost of Tannoy's.

I am happier with these than my Acoustat X's or Quad ESL's.
