New Orleans CL find from last week. 302's? Since I was 100 miles to the north I had a friend pick them up for me. I'm having my first listen tonight and they are nicely detailed on the warm side. These would be great with tubes but the SS is sounding pretty good. The seller claimed a '57 vintage but I haven't opened up the back panels yet for a look. I think I got my $30 worth!

Very Nice! I have a set from '62. I replaced the paper coned mids and tweets with later aluminum coned versions and upgraded the crossovers. It made a world of difference.:yes:
 
I was reading about the Tobin mods. Looks like a fairly simple project if you can find the later tweets and mids.
 
Has anyone any thoughts about pairing the Bozak Bass with a horn?
I can't find any posts like that and it seems like a worthwhile match.

Hmmm. I missed seeing those. I usually look over the NOLA CL ads well. Good pickup for $30
 
Bozak woofers are usally crossed over at 400 hz, a bit too low for a horn set-up I think.
Albowlly if there is a Bozak sticker on the back it may have the date code. 705 would be May 1970 for example.
1957 would be the first generation woofers and tweeters. Early tweeters have a silver dust cap. The early woofers are not the secret wool and what not formula.

That is the urban cab that was their longest produced design so the gut could be any vintage. If the label do not say 302 the it is the e-300 cabinet eith eith thr woofer a tweeter pair or has been modded to a 302. That was one of the company's grest selling feature. Buy the cabinet you want the ststem to finally be and as finances permit and equip changes do noy buy nw speakrt, just the drivers and possibly crossovers.
 
I opened them up and this is what's there:
Woofer: B199A
Mid: B05307
Crossover: N 10102


There is only a shadow where the labels used to be on the back but they seem to be E 300 Urbans

Just finished your thread. It's a Bozak night. There's a label down on the spider of my woofer with B199A. Move the fiberglass a little and you might see it.
 
What you have looks like a 302A set-up. It doesn't look like any Bozak-made cabinet I've seen. You're right about the B199A (obviously), but the other driver you see is a mid not a tweeter. The date code stamped on the back refers to June 1961, so I'd bet those are paper coned B209 mids. There are most likely two tweeters mounted in front of the woofer. You can see the wires going to them and you should be able to see them with a flash light through the grill cloth. If they are the same vintage as the mids then they are most likely the paper coned B-200Xs. You can tell if they are with the flashlight because they have a silver-colored foil center cap. The later aluminum coned B-200Ys are all black. There might be a label on the mid in the other cabinet if you're curious to know which version it is. I think the number you listed must be a serial number. You can actually see on the crossover which drivers were meant to be used when it was produced. If it's all original then that's probably what you have.

Thanks for the dating info. I figured out that the tweeters were in front of the woofer and edited my post to reflect that what I was looking at was a mid. The tweeters have the silver cone.
 
For $30, you bought a whole lot of speaker - congratulations! I am in the process of updating a spare pair of crossovers with new caps/resistors and a modification/upgrade. I hope to have mine finished this weekend. There is a great deal of information regarding Bozaks here on AK. There is also a very active Yahoo! group that discusses nothing but Bozaks.

The tweeters are the paper coned B200X. The B200Y is the tweeter you want. It looks like the mids are the aluminum cones. If they are black they are aluminum. The paper is brown. There are 2 different aluminum coned mids. The B209A and B209B. The 209B is the more desirable mid. The A has a foam ring that can deteriorate. However if you hear no buzzing etc. from the mid you are fine. I can't tell which ones you have from the photos. The numbers on the back look like 616...June 1961 they could be 209A's. Shine a flashlight and see if the cones are black. The grills are held in place with 4 screws on the bottom of the cabinet. I don't think your cabinets are the Urbans, but they are 302's. There should be serial numbers on the rear of the cabinet.

I have 302-A Urbans from the mid 60's. They retailed for $800 a pair back in the day. I did the Tobin xover mod and it made a big difference. It is cheap and easy to do. :thmbsp: There is a 25uf cap for the mid and I am going to bypass it with a Russian PIO. When I do this I will take and post photos of the modded xovers. I *might* try a 25uf motor run PIO cap in the xover.

The Tobin mods are a must B4 you judge the speakers. Just use the recommended Dayton caps and give them 100 hours to settle in. I did change the speaker binding posts that was cheap and easy too. I reused the internal wire but may replace it with continuous cast copper. I wanted to make changes a little at a time and listen a while before doing anything else.

Bottom line: These were high end speakers and with a little work can really sing.
