Brand New Used Vandersteen 2Ci's

Just got these yesterday. Imaging is great but seem to be a little boomy. I have them about 1' from the back wall and probably need to move them out more.

Anyway, was trying to get the top off so I could eyeball the drivers and can't get it off. Drove a wood shim (the kind to shim a residential door) between the top and the sock until I was afraid to hammer it in anymore and the top didn't budge. Luckily nothing got broke or torn.

I thought it was supposed to pop off?

Anyone done this?

since that didnt work try a sledgehammer, swing real hard.

now, when elroymcgee see's this thread he can tell you what you need to know, he's got the same pair a few weeks back and has already gone through all of this.

Easy on the tops!!

Go to the vandersteen website-I think they have directions..
You have to start at the bottom and remove like, hundreds of staples and roll it up from the bottom.
vandersteen will explain it better..
I'd stop with the prying on the top or you'll probably break off the dowels that hold the 'sock' out away from your drivers.

BTW I "think" vandersteen has pictures of the 2c's without the sock and as cut-aways to satisfy your curiosity..

The instructions at Vandersteen say to pop the bottom off. No info about the top. Hmmm. IIRC, the bottom on mine is attached with screws and MAYBE the top is screwed on from the inside.

And, I wanted to peek at the drivers to see if they're ok (rotten foam, cracked, bent, rusty or whatever.) Enquiring minds want to know! :D

I think--And I use the term lightly that the CI's are a foam free speaker.
Butyl rubber If I remember correctly.

Just un-do the screws holding the bottom plate on.
Now pull the bottom off, you will see where the bottom of the sock is stapled to the sub-base.
remove all of the staples and roll up the sock.
And I thought the Vandy 2's had registered low WAF before, boy do they rate with the socks removed!!! :thumbsdn:
Kinda neat though all those little boxes..

Great speaker- I still run mine in the laundry room! WAF be damned!!

warmest wishes,

The Manual says 1 foot from rear wall and 2 ft minimum on the outsides, Do you have them on stands? if not that could account for the boom. get them off the floor 8 inches. also the manual says not to tilt the speaker back unless your ears are more than 1 meter high, basically standing instead of sitting, there are directions on the vandy website for sock removal instructions, qboneus pretty much explained what the website says. the manual also suggests a little toe-in for better soundstage, I personally like them square

Stands

Uh, no. Not on the stands although I have the rectangular tube Sound Anchor ones that are about 6" high. Mine are filled with what appears to be concrete. It just looks like concrete - I didn't try to break a chunk out of it or do any chemical analysis. It could be something else.

Anyway, these are great speakers. Toeing in, to me, is fine tuning and I'm not at the fine tuning stage, yet.

BTW, I've had a pair of Vndrstn 1's for about 6-7 years. Still have them.
