i picked up a set of vintage Braun speakers off craigs some time ago and havent found much info on them.from what i can find is they were produced in w.GERMANY BY bRAUN in 1965 and they were known as the L-1000 studio monitors,they came with the matching csv 1000 amp,any info on the quality of the individual braun drivers in each speaker would be appreciated.there are 13 drivers in each cabinet ,2 horns,three 8 in woofers and the rest are midrange,with the top four omni directional.id like to have them recapped .All the individual speakers seem to have rubber surrounds so no rotting foam.one bank of the four midrange are not working, any idea on replacement mid drivers for these if recapp doesnt fix the problem

yes those ar the ones.no aluminum bases tho.they do sound incredible.lots of base with the three woofers and the horns are crisp and detailed,big soundstage from these,they have an aluminum perferated cover surrounding them and are very heavey!!

Impressive looking speakers. The specs aren't too hot. 25-13000 +- 4dB ? I guess they used too many mitteltoners and not enough hochtoners :^{

It seems unlikely that all four mids in the bank would be dead unless they had something spilled on them. I'd check each driver with an ohmmeter and then check the wiring. Are there any level adjustments on these? It could be a dirty switch, potentiometer or rheostat.

I'd love to see more pictures.

i will take a few picks when the wife gets home with camera.the top of each speaker lifts off exposeing the top four omni-directional mid speakers.they look exactly like the ones in the picture in the previous post.the amp has din plugs so i havent used it yet,very heavey for a 60 wpc amp tho over 50 lbs.these do sound special tho.been driving them with a sansui 9090.will upload pics soon thanks

I recently viewed a display of Braun design stereos from the 50's - 60's - 70's, the designer being Dieter Rheims (sp?), who also contributed to the design of the sets for 2001 Space Oddyssey. Very nice lines, but I didn't see anything this large. This was at the MOMA in San Francisco. European styling doesn't show up this large in speakers in America. Very cool look. Good luck with the repairs.

thanks phredphones,i will be taking these over to my speaker buddy for testing this weeknd if the snow lifts.dieter rams was indeed involved with the developemnt of this L-1000 STUDIO MONITOR SYSTEM.I HAD AN ELDERLY FELLOW LIVING BACK EAST ,toronto area,who contacted me actually inquireing about the matching amp,he worked in germany with dieter braun at the time this system was developed,I sometimes wish this old equipment could talk and give the details of its travels over the yrs.

yes i briefly posted them,i doubt there will ever be another posted,supposedly Braun has a museum with a set on display in a castle in germany somewhere

Interesting bit of history... Braun moved to Huntsville, AL (late 60's I presume) and lived atop Monte Sano mountain in a neighborhood where many of the German Rocket Scientists associated with the Apollo program lived, including Wernher Von Braun. I once came across about two dozen empty Braun L-710 and 810 cabinets at a thrift store that were 'seconds'. Apparently they came from his basement! A couple of AKers got a set of those.
