Electronic version of a Naval signaling lamp, or the predecessor to fiber optic, just without the fiber depending on how you want to look at it. Or both honestly. Also same idea as an optocoupler or the optical sound track on movie film.
 
In today's break time, we delve into the alternate universe of vacuum components. Vacuum capacitors.

With your typical variable capacitor found in radios the dielectric is air - but the advantage here is that the air has been removed preventing ionization (arcs) allowing the capacitors to operate at extremely high voltages, low leakage, and dielectric loss. Towards the end we see it's capable of being charged to 5,000 volts.
