"Broken" Advent 5002s

Crazy Zirconium
Thinking about picking up some advent 5002s for $75, but the seller describes them with:

"both wooofers in the speakers never worked but they are LOUD!! and i have a little woofer that makes them sound perfect."

and in another posting

"the woofer is busted in both and has been since i got them but you can hook one up seperate or get them fixed easily. they stand about two feet off the ground. speakers in them sound great though the woofer is busted they are loud and clear."

I'm concerned he may have been driving them with dusted surrounds, would this have damaged the speakers?

I'm new to this, and understand these speakers can sound great with a refoam, but don't know how to evaluate them, or even if it's worth the two hour drive to go check them out.

For $90 and a little less driving there are a pair of Advent Legacy II speakers that have been recently re-foamed available.

Thanks in advance for any advice!

If this nimrod has been driving them "LOUD" with "busted" woofers, chances are pretty good that he's cooked the VC's of those woofers. Back away slowly and keep looking. I would never buy anything from someone who openly admits to abusing their equipment.

As far as the Legacy II's, $90 is ebay pricing. IMHO, you'd be better served to find a pair OLA's, NLA's or Legacy's in need of a refoam for under 50 bucks. Toss in $10 in surrounds, glue and labor and at least you'll know the refoam was done properly.

I personally like the Legacy's. The pecan top and bottom plates are classy, and the sound embodies the "original" Advent qualities with, somewhat, extended highs that update them without being too forward. For me, they are a nice near-modern interpretation of the "classic" Advent sound.
