Broken head adapter

Recently bought a 506-1 with broken P mount adapter. I removed the P mount and put on a 1/2" Grado but when I reattached the Dual head shell adapter and screwed on the the little lock screw the lugs on the adapter broke off. Looked everywhere for another ULM adapter but alas it is nowhere to be found (even on ebay. Doesnt look like I can remove the head shell so I was thinking maybe looking for another tonearm? Pics are a little out of focus but should suffice for reference. Thanks in advance for any help.

I had a similar "problem" with a Dual CS-508. I couldn't find the correct cartridge or adapter at a decent price but I eventually bought a tonearm with cartridge from a 1254 on ebay for less than the part alone. I hope I bought the right arm, as I have not received it yet. :D

ow: You could try contacting Dualfred for the ULM adaptor kit - he might still have some. The other possibility would be to modify the arm with the headshell of the 505-3.

Mc: I fear you haven't, 'cause the arm of the 1254 for one thing is statically balanced only - and given that the 1254 is a small chassis model with 27 cm platter, its arm will most probably also be a tad shorter.

Lini: I am not changing the arm; I just need the adapter. From what I can tell that part is the same and this arm comes with an Ortofon cartridge installed with adapter.

Good luck, I just spent 2 yrs scouring that auction site looking for one. I just acquired a good one from a walk in customer last week.

Mc: Ah, I see - yes, the carrier plate of the adaptor kit would be just the same for all models with 2nd gen. proprietary ULM mount headshell like the 506-1, 508, 1254...

And on a sidenote: The 1254 with the stock TKS236 (made by AT) technically was just LM, though - 'cause Dual's ULM definition was 8 g total effektive mass (arm plus mounted cart) maximum, and the TKS236 was a bit too heavy for that. Whereas the 506-1 and the 508 with one of the Ortofon-made TKS-ULM-carts would really be ULM with a total effective mass of just 5.6 g. While 1st gen. proprietary ULM and 3rd gen. ULM were a bit heavier with typically 7 g on most models.

I checked Dualfreds and there's non available. looks like I wasted $70 unless I can change out the tonearm

I am on the same boat, i got a CS506 last year with a missing adapter, I talked to some one about possibly making an adapter, but he is taking forever. I may have to get creative if I want to use this TT.

Well as I was suggesting, widen the net to include a parts table or tonearm that comes with cartridge. I paid about $20 with shipping for the tonearm from the 1254 and though the arm is superfluous I will also get an extra cartridge body. I had been looking for 2-3 months only and not that often. I almost bought a new cartridge that came with what I needed for about 3 times that but held off.

Just contacted Dualfred through eBay and he told me he does have some adapters in stock. looks like we are back in business:))

ow: See? That's why I suggested you to contact him (and not just check what he's got up on his ebay shop), 'cause I was pretty sure he would still have some...

Thanks Lini. One thing I noticed is that my tonearm counter weight is not threaded to take the extra weight that comes with the kit. Does that mean that the 506-1 didn't need the weight or that I should stick it on anyway to counter the 1/2 cartridge that will be going on?

ow: Did you remove the plastic cap first?

Yes and it broke apart on me. I thought it would be threaded but it wasn't. It was a plastic spindle. I glued it back together. Looks like I will be glueing the extra counterweight to the end.
