Bryston 4b failure / can speaker be fixed?

turned on the 4b today and the left speaker made a light 'pop' then whistling type of noise. :sigh:

only high frequencies then ensued from this speaker.
2 or 3 minutes later I powered it off.

The bryston left rear heat sinks were very hot.

what happened to the amp guys ? I know this can be sent to Bryston for repair but am curious.

However, the a/d/s/ compact speaker is toast. it sounds like crap on another system and nothing like its sibling speaker. The woofer is not even vibrating.
the speaks have no fuses, did I fry the crossovers ?
thoughts on why the woof failed not the tweet?
these were well-made little monitors sad to lose one.

thanks for any input , Bernie

Sorry to hear about your speaker.

It could be that whistle or oscillation was below the crossover frequency of the lil woofer. ...and fairly sinusoidal. That would send all of that high output tone to the woofer.
That seems too low a frequency for normal semiconductor oscillation. Maybe a cap opening or internally arcing?? Filtering. There's lots to check and Bryston has a lifetime warranty. Let Bryston know you're curious.

If you find that your woofer stops, turn off your amp immediately. If the voice coil overheats, expands/warps it's coil on the coil form, scrapes the varnish off the voice coil wire that is shorting on the metal gap. It could happen.

no I'm not under warranty. It seemed the Bryston was not playing with the dynamics /volume of a 250 watt amp through some Acoustat 1's yesterday, so today I tried the little a/d/s/.
If this failed yesterday and fried an acoustat instead, that would have really sucked.
