Budget Pioneer SX Receivers?

I currently have a SX 580 and 680 have had a few of the sx 780 these are great sounding receivers and look great. Yes they have the power packs so if they go you have a parts unit. The Flouroscans are also great looking and sounding receivers I have had the 3600 and 3800. These things are all approaching 40 years old and can have problems. As most of us have experienced reading the Deoxit thread will do you a world of good. Good luck!

Oops, I meant to type SX-727.

As I mentioned last night, there is currently a very clean looking SX-727 on the San Francisco craigslist, near the OP's location.

I'd take it any day over the eBay SX-3400 eBay that the OP posted. To me, it's a no brainer. The SX-727 was 4th up the food chain from the bottom, closer to the top than the bottom. It has over twice the power (37 WPC vs. 15 WPC), looks better (with a real walnut veneer case) and the build quality is vastly superior than the early-80s BOTL SX-3400. I haven't heard them sided by side, but in comparable condition, my money would be on the SX-727 in that category, too.
Would you mind sending me the link? I couldn't find it in my area. I might need to get it shipped if its too far if I take a liking to it.

Yes you have to love second to TOTL plus as you say a real veneer cabinet and quality build o_O.

The 1500 II is very worthy receiver as well. Great sound and it plays surprisingly louder than its specs would suggest. One of two silver pieces Ive scored at thrifts(rotel rx-402)

I have been looking up these Onkyo's as l have had no experience with them, they look nice and they do seem to be underated price wise comparable to their competition.

I don't have an SX-727, but I do have an SX-525 and SX-737 (listening to it now) and they are both excellent sounding receivers and real eye candy in my opinion - some of the best looking Pioneer receivers and some of the best of any brand from the early to mid-1970s. The SX-525 I have as a champagne colored front panel and knobs with bronze lettering that gives is a rather unique look. The other SX-525s I've seen have the standard silver face with black lettering (which is also very attractive).

That sounds really nice haven't seen one like that. Yes l am a fan of the x3x series also, have not long sold my other sx-939 and sx-737 (can't keep them all), am listening to my remaining restored 939 now.

That champagne/bronze SX-525 was the second vintage receiver I restored. I still have it, in my daughter's bedroom driving a pair of Dynaco A25 speakers of comparable vintage. They make a nice match for a small bedroom system. When I got it, it was pretty hideous looking. Previous owner was obviously a heavy smoker. It was so covered in filth, I didn't even realize it wasn't silver until I started cleaning the knobs and face plate. I also had to replace all 13 lamps. In the end, I was very pleased with the way it turned out. I really need to post some good photos of it sometime.

I guess I might try some other brands or models in the $100 budget, like Yamaha, Sansui, Realistic? Any recommendations within that price or a little over is fine. I'm also looking for cheap speakers that will get the job done for now, I will buy replacement speakers later.

I'm up near Sacramento (but definitely not IN Sac), do you have any plans on traveling up this way anytime soon? We might be able to work out a "long term loan"...
