Seller is BS'ing about the list price in the 1980's. In 1987 the A150 Series II listed for $500 in vinyl wrap and $550 in real wood veneer, I paid $500 cash for the wood veneer version and about twenty feet of big fat speaker cable which wouldn't fit the spring connectors until I added MonsterCable pin terminals. The A200 was closer to the $800 price point, then there was the A400 north of that.
Rectilinear were made in Brooklyn, so you might have some luck given your location.

The KA-3500 is lower powered Kenwood, so you do want your speakers to be more on the efficient side, as ported ones will give you more volume. One lesson I learned is not all vintage speakers are serviceable. I found a pair of Harman Kardon HK20 at a thrift store, one tweeter was not working, so I went to change out the capacitor, just to find that the woofer and tweeters were permanently glued in with thick black glue that looked like tar, but dry. Same experience with a pair of the early KLH 6, which were in beautiful condition, but no way to get inside without destroying it. Otherwise, you should have plenty of choices, just be patient.

Those would be nice and we can have @Tommarc back in a few weeks, months looking for an amp upgrade. We are good at this, get em in, get em something nice and then set the hook. Reel em in and get the gear upgraded. Maybe that KA-3500 could be swapped for a KA-8100, you know staying in the same line, just going up in power. So many options.
Wonder if those RS-4B replaced woofers are any good?

I wonder if the the seller means he's keeping the University 6201s or if they're part of the deal but just not correct for W60s.
If it's the latter proposition I'd say $45 is a pretty nice price.

Most (all ?) Akai speakers were bloody awful. I had some large 3 way floorstanders that were pretty bland. Akai were well known for tape systems, less so for speakers. Personally, I found some of the JVC SK family to be budget gems - they fly under the radar mostly. I had a pair of SK-1000ii and they were great, they cost me $20 and just needed some woofer surrounds.

I wasn't moving him up just for the sake of moving him up. I was doing it because I thought that was an insane bargain. Admittedly I didn't notice the replaced woofers. At the price, I'd probably still audition them. If they are decent he can buy them now and source new woofers as budget allows.

Lots of good recommendations, and a lot more great speakers out there. Speakers are perhaps one of the most critical and subjective parts of your audio set-up, so no one can make "that call" as to what works for you and your room--go listen to as many as you can. Sooner or later something is going to really put that smile on your face. An actual budget would help, and then pad it by 20%, since the ones you really like are going to be more than you wanted to spend. Happy Hunting!!!
