Has anyone here ever built speaker stands out of wood?
I was thinking of making a set for my Yamaha NS 690 speakers! I did not do a
search,but thought maybe someone here had posted some plans for DIY speaker stands?Thanks for any help someone can give me! I am a fairly new member and I am not excatly sure if this was the right fourm to post this?If not,please direct me to the right fourm!Brian

Brian,
You should have done a search, as there was a thread on this a couple of weeks ago. For stands, all you need to determine is the height of the speaker that you want and then construct a base. It doesn't have to be very elaborate, maybe just a box the same width and depth of the Yamahas, with the height determined by what you need for your listening position. If you wish, you could fill the box/stand with sand for a really dead and solid base.

Another approach would be to use schedule 40 PVC pipe (3 or 4 inches ID) for the uprights and use wood or MDF at each end to provide the base and the speaker platform. If you use an allthread rod though the bottom and top and tighten the nuts after filling the pipe with sand or lead shot, that makes for a fairly nice stand as well. Just use a couple of layers of wood/MDF at each end so you can counter sink the nuts below the surface to avoid scratching the floor or the bottom of the speaker's cabinet.

I made a set of stands for some small monitor-y speakers using some MDF scraps and a couple of old hockey sticks with broken blades. Add weight to the base and they're not too bad. If you have an idea of what you want, you don't really need a set of plans.
 
I used 4x4 spruce uprights finished on four sides, on 12x12 pine bases, with 7x9 pine top plates, glued & screwed. Took me one afternoon.
 
I need some such stands, and was thinking along OvenMaster's lines. However, the sand-filled-box idea is intriguing....
