Built in DAC 24bit/96khz vs a separate DAC

Maybe a silly question but, if a newer amplifier has ToSlink and Coaxial digital inputs, does that means it has a built in DAC 24bit/96khz, right?

So if I want to use my older analog amplifier but at the same time I want to get the most of the digital output 24bit/96khz of my let's say OPPO CD/DVD/SACD player, can I introduce a stand alone DAC in between the CDP and the amplifier?

I would just use the one in the receiver. If you already have it, why get another? My friend's low end pioneer 5.1 HTIB "Reciever" had a night and day transformation after I used the coax input rather than the cheap dac in his DVD player.
 
no, that's just it. I don't have a receiver with a DAC, at least not a good one. I have a Pioneer SX-217 which I scavenged from the Goodwill. It has all the bells and whistles but just an awful no power toy really.

I want to use this Yamaha M-40 amplifier C-40 preamp combo that has analog AUX RCA inputs.
 
Which OPPO do you have? Run the analog out from the Oppo to the preamp analog in.

Am I missing something? It should be that easy.

HAHA! That is my friends' EXACT stereo.

Yeah, That Oppo looks pretty neat, Just remember to run it at 0db for purity. Though I'm sure a $1200 dac has every possible feature.
 
This is what i was meaning. I don't have these right now, this is just for illustration.

I would imagine when it transfers from coaxial to the rca analog inputs it loses its digital chain? I would need a pure digital coaxial/Toslink pre/amplifier input to achieve a true digital chain of 24bit/96khz?

What you have pictured above will work just fine. Whether the DAC is internal or external, the "Digital Chain" is broken when the preamp and amp get ahold of it. The idea of using a separate DAC in the first place is that most DACs in cheap equipment are noisy and in my experience seem a bit on the quiet side.
