That's the question I'm gonna get now, I guess.

I have a Sansui 8080 receiver, that had peeling woodgrain... like it seems, MANY Sansui 8080s. So, I finally decided to do something about it.

I ordered in some of the Parts Express cherry speaker-cover vinyl, peeled and cleaned off the old stuff, and PRESTO CHANGO... PRISTINE Sansui 8080!

I like the effect- it harks a bit to the rosewood finish Sansui used on the G-series receivers. Definitely catches the eye, in a GOOD way!

Well, on the 7070s and 8080s I've worked on, the woodgrain just PEELED OFF in GREAT BIG SHEETS. As in, I managed to remove all of it, without any tools, other than my fingernails and a razor blade (to start the peel). This leaves a solid tan plastic layer, which once cleaned with alcohol, is just fine to attach the new vinyl veneer to.

Now, in SOME cases, a heat gun would be quite useful. I had to clear off all the vinyl covering on a pair of old Acoustiphase speakers... and it was a B***H. I managed to do it without a heat gun, but BOY, it took a while. Tiny little fragments coming off, one at the time...

Hey now, that looks really tuff. :thmbsp: What a great idea! Might be just the little distraction I need. Easy job etc. jazz up the ole G 9000. Hmmm wonder if I would be sorry later if I made such a change? Hmmmm. Ya know, not original anymore? Tempting though after seeing that!
 
at first glance i thought it was that sansui we had for a raffle a while back. nice work.
