For someone who cares more about their decor than about their hi-fi, and who likes rolltop desks, these made sense. Certainly higher WAF than the usual stereo!
I almost bought a pair of speakers that were housed in cabriole-legged, inlaid-veneer cabinets with cloth-and-fretwork fronts, that looked just like some kind of end tables or cabinets. Decent Japanese Crysler speakers inside (still in their own original cabinets within the larger outer ones, and thus possibly removable?). Very high WAF, and they complemented another piece of furniture we have, beautifully, but I just couldn't figure out any arrangement of furniture using them that would work, so in the end I passed on them. Still sort of regret it.
The rolltop desk stereo? Cool in a way, but not for everyone, nor for every interior.
