buying records thru' discogs

So as an experiment today, I ordered an album, a box set of 5 or 6 records, from a dealer on Discogs. I've been browsing used vinyl over there lately and noticed that a lot of the offers are price + dealer calculates shipping.

In this case, I was buying a $7 set. Shipping from Canada runs....$22. I'm not going to quarrel about the price in this case, but going forward is there a better way for me to protect myself from unexpected shipping charges, when using Discogs?

Any time it's international shipping, I contact the seller, even from Canada. I've had something similar happen.
 
It is under "view payment and shipment information" on the right side of the screen. Sometimes it is hard to wade through al the text but it is always there. That said, it is expensive to have stuff from Canada shipped to the USA. Maybe our Cheeto-In-Chief can get those mailing rates down!

Most sellers allow you to cancel if shipping is too high or will send you the invoice with shipping and you can pay it or decline it. Cultivating a small cadre of known and trusted sellers on there has served me well. Not as well as here but a clear second place.
 
International shipping always costs more. US to Canada, Canada to US, you pay for crossing border services. Often you could get by with paying duty, but as soon as you do, you get hit with service charges. Those are normally more than the duty on the item. That's why it's cheaper to buy more than one at a time. The fee is per sansaction.

They seem to be nabbing me lately. Just too expensive to do cross border shopping now.
 
Just pick a copy from the location that is cheaper. Funny how that is the rest of the world pays a lot more for used Vinyl that we do here in the States. You would think with all those EU countries who claim to be all art and culture hounds sure make their people pay a lot.

I prefer to buy the record where the recording originated, if possible. For me, a lot of that stuff comes from across the pond.
 
I just shipped a record to Germany - cost ~$23 if I recall on the shipping. It is crazy expensive to ship to/from Canada for some reason.

I have thousands of imports, Europe, Germany, Netherlands, but I try to not buy them from sellers overseas as the cost is much higher, their are plenty of imports here in the states, probably a 1/4 of my collection are imports.

Most of my Philips are from the Netherlands, my Deutsche Grammophons are from Germany, my EMI, and some others are from the UK, I have a lot of Russian vinyl as well.
 
Many Canadians have ship to address in Buffalo, for their pick-up, we should do the same, Who do you know across the Alex bay bridge?
 
Only issue I've had on Discogs is with sellers that don't have the record in stock, but list it as such. It's obvious after payment when it takes 4-5 weeks to receive and the postmark is from another State than the seller.

Most Discogs sellers list their terms with every item they have for sale. This would include accepted methods of payment and shipping costs. Look for a "View Payment and Shipping Information" link on the right side of the page between the links for "Add to Cart" and "More Copies For Sale". If the seller's listed terms don't answer your questions, there's a "Contact Seller" link directly below the shipping and payment link.
