C-2102 corrosion

DB-7

Super Member
I have the C-2101, B2101 combo and have a C-2102 for a backup.
I sent the C-2102 to the tech for little glitchyness in the selector switching, and a few lights that were burnt out.
He is working on it now and this is what he found so far.
Check out the corrosion on the power supply board.

That looks like it has been somewhere very humid or damp. A bit of blackness on the leads of those bridge rectifiers would be normal, but not the green fuzz. All of that will clean up very well with liquid jewellery cleaner (don't use anything abrasive), and DeOxit won't be good enough to deal with what we can see.

NB: I don't see any Sansui glue - so it is very unlikely to be the cause - although the 'look' is similar).

When I got it, it looked like it was from a damp/humid environment .
I told the tech about that before I dropped it off.
Caps are bad too and it's getting the full rebuild treatment.

Going to send the C-2101 and the B2101 in for service as soon as he finishes the C-2102.

The C-2102 is one of those bad Ebay deals.
"Fully tested works great."
"Condition in pics"
But what do you do? They are getting harder and harder to find

Got the C-2102 back from the tech yesterday.
Power supply board cleaned up and the caps replaced. It sounds amazing.
While picking it up the tech suggested doing the rest of the caps on the main board if i wanted the best out of it, but I'm going to just use the C-2102 as is for now.
I dropped off my C-2101 to get the full meal deal, and I'll send the C-2102 back later to finish what I started.

I know this was over a year ago but could you tell me what different series caps you used in the different locations on that PS board please .

I did not do the work myself.
The Tech used Nichicon caps through out the amp. I do not know what series they are or the values used in different locations.
You could start a new thread about your project or keep reading old posts on B-2102 to find what your looking for.

Looks like UPW and maybe UPM . Thanks for quick reply

The PW (and other Px) series from Nichicon often (always?) have brown wraps or labels.

The electrolytic caps in a power supply (and those on other boards that store locally the power coming from the power supply) do best with low ESR, high ripple capacitors. Nichicon's Px and Hx are good examples. Reading the data sheets, even just the very top section, and comparing the different choices, the different series from a given manufacturer is the best way to know which fit this use.

Their Kx are better suited for audio path since they have lower DC leakage (and therefore lower distortion).

Knowing how to find this info (in the data sheets) is good as manufacturers discontinue a series or distributors run out of a series when you need to place an order. Having an easy way to determine what your next-best choice is can make a difference.

So the Pani FC or FM or Nichi UPM on those what I would call secondary side of power supply . not sure what legit term is .

Anyone use the Rubycon ZLJ before ? The Low ESR are Panasonic FR Nichicon HE . Specs look good on the ZLJ little higher ripple And Chemi Con KY also look good would they be close to the AWD that sansui used ?
