C-28 MC2105 Help

I have corrected the level difference.
I'll look into getting it serviced locally - I would love to send it to this Terry you mention, but for the price to ship it with Canada Post I could probably just buy a new one.

I found the original paperwork and it was serviced in 2010 by Audio Classics at the cost of $450 so based on that info as well as your insights, I guess that's the ballpark. It's condition was listed as "fair" when it went into that shop. Maybe this unit just has a few too many things working against it...

Thanks again, gang.

Little confused. Your Location states Seattle so why would Canada Post come into play when shipping to Terry?

If on the other side of the border, maybe just drive over the border and mail to him and if you have a friend in Seattle have Terry mail it back to him.

After following all of the suggestions (...) it's clear that the C-28 is the culprit and needs professional help.
Local company quoted me $300 - $400 for servicing - this is in Canada. Does that sound about right? Because it sure sounds expensive to me...

$300 - $400 sounds reasonable to me. As others here have stated, it's quite possible to put 4 to 8 hours into one of these, depending on what was done to it previously, if anything. Figure an average of $60 to $100 per hour, and multiply.

Is the local company an authorized Mac service agency? If not, the next question would be for the technician there, which is how many of this model has he worked on? It is a complex piece, but a good audio tech and a proper schematic should make it possible to get it up and running. If he's worked on more than a half-dozen C28's then you're probably OK. (I suspect you've got a bad capacitor or a poor contact somewhere in the tone circuits or the loudness compensation area.)

Now, even if the local company is a Mac authorized agency, call McIntosh and ask them how well they know the tech-- is he new to the brand or has he worked on their gear for a long time?

McIntosh could also give you a list of authorized service agencies within a given driving distance of where you live, both US and Canada. Just be sure to ask the above question regarding the tech's experience with the brand.

I forgot to wrap things up!

I want to thank all you members again for being so helpful (and patient) and at least if someone else has the issue they can see a resolution here.

Like 4-2-7, skippy, dewickt and damacman suggested - the ports on the C-28 just needed a healthy cleaning. DeOxit seemed to really do the job well, and I'm back to sweet sounds.

Good forum? Great forum.

Thanks again to all.
