C2300 MC phono stage

I am currently running some Telefunken ribs in my MC phono stage and Gold Lions in the line stage. As expected the phono stage is noisy (hiss-y) when nothing is playing and volume up to 70 - I was curious about noise in the phono stage compared to the line stage. I am naturally concerned about this extaneous noise now when playing LPs. Anything I can do to tame the tube rush. Second question, if I go to an outboard phono stage any suggestions? My TT is a Rega P9 with a Lyra Delos MC cartridge.

It's normal, you don't play at 70% anyhow. It is so on mine as well but when you put the needle on the record it is more silence. It is so on all phonostage out there.

The phono section has more gain than the rest of the preamp since it actually is making the signal bigger. All of the high level sources are actually turned down by the preamp but phono has gain. In the case of the MC section this is an additional 20 dB of gain which is huge. You should only be concerned with the noise when the volume is set at the maximum level you would use when listening to records. If your tubes are old and worn out you will have more noise.

Nice cartridge. :thmbsp: Continue to tube-roll. There are likely quieter tubes out there if you are bothered by the noise. However, unless you can hear the noise when the LP is playing you really shouldn't worry about it. How often do you listen at 70 on the volume dial? If you do, can you hear the hiss when the music is playing? That noise at high levels is one more bit of 'tube magic'. If it bothers you then, imho, you are not really a tubeophile (I'm not, after 4-5 years of trying).
 
Has anyone tried the Gold Lions in their MC stage? I also have some Psvane 12AX7 I might give a try. I realize I am becoming too anal about my tube noise but was just curious if what I am experreincing is normal - which sounds like it is. I suppose if I went with a seperate phono stage (NOVA Phonomena) inot the line stage that may cure some of my ailments.
 
I am running GL 12AX7a's in my 2300 for the MC and line stages. It is dead quiet for an MC phono stage. Quieter than my Sutherland PHD, which is my only comparison. The C2300 has a hybrid MC phono stage, so it is less sensitive to tube noise than an all tube stage would be. An external phono stage is no guarantee, it could be better, but maybe not. You'd just have to listen and compare.
